Coming towards home a few days ago it went from rain to snow. Of course I had the wipers on. Thing is... the passenger side wiper, sometimes, not all the time, would sweep farther to the left than normal, and they would hang up and not work. I'd have to pull over and lift up on that wiper and they would start working again, only to get stuck once again down the road a bit.

What would cause this passenger wiper to sweep too far to the left where it would not be able to go back to the right without manually helping it?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.... that made for one LONG and cold day!:biggrin_25510:

is the arm held on by a nut?

it could be loose, allowing the arm to slip on the shaft.

I know some cars that this happens to some.................

    Gears Thanks this.
  4. This happened to me in my old FLD a few weeks ago in a really heavy ice and snow storm. As a matter of fact, my right wiper went so far to the left, that it hung up past the divider in the windshield, froze down, and it's assembly ended up ripping itself out of the arms that run to the wiper motor.

I recently converted from an all air operated system to an electric one so that I'd have intermittent wipers, so I thought I had just screwed something up and not got the install right. It turned out to only be a little clip and was no big deal to fix, and in an FLD, you can run no problem without the right wiper.

I had a horrible night with the wipers freezing to the windshield and ice piling up in huge clumps on the wipers making them useless. There was no way my defroster was keeping up in the blinding snow and ice with a 20 mph headwind into sub-zero temps. My fix was to buy some heated wipers that get up to 200 degrees. I'm not dealing with that frozen wiper crap any more.

I don't know if this will help with the "oversweep" problem, but it's sure to at least keep me from having to hit the shoulder ever six and a half feet to clear the wipers off.

I'm interested in the responses to this, too.

If the wiper blades have been changed recently they may be the incorrect size. I had this happen once where someone installed 450mm long blades and they were meant to be 400mm blades

Blades were changed less than a year ago. I'm beginning to think my problem was very much like Paddletrucker described. Maybe the extra weight on the blades gave them too much momentum. Regardless, they are held on by a nut and as bulldozerbert suggested, I'm going to see if it's tight.

Wiper arm may just be place wrong on wiper motor shaft. Should be able to set it correctly by turning wipers to off position, then remove both arms from the shaft, and replace them into the position they should be at when they are off. Most of the ones I've dealt with were held on by a small metal clip on the wiper arm, right at the shaft. Slide the clip out, do the remove and reinstall and lock clip in place. If that doesn't take care of the problem then the sizes are probably wrong.

Thanks Don. One thing I noticed, is that sometimes it would sweep to the correct location and then it would start "oversweeping" and going too far to the left. Crazy stuff eh?

Could be the wiper arm, or for that matter the shaft has worn down the teeth that keep it in place. An inspection should tell you which it is.

Paddletrucker: I was gonna send a private message, but I haven't posted enough for it to let me send one.

I, too, have an FLD (1996) with air wipers and am looking at doing a conversion to electric, but am finding NO information on doing this. Can you help me out? what all did you have to do? how much did it cost? how well does it work? etc?

    thanks very much in advance!

And THIS POST is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of why there should be no arbitrary closing of old threads!

Sorry I can't answer your question drfraser, but this was a conversation in another thread, with somebody whining that "old threads" should be closed, if not deleted. Just wanted to make the point.

Keep posting, and you'll be able to make PMs in no time. Welcome to the forum!
