The synchronizer for the high low range in the back half of the trans is bad. This will eventually happen to all roadrangers. Its common, not hard to fix and not that expensive either. Buy the way your not splitting, your changing range.

I had the same issue on a 9 speed EF I drove. Told the company they told me to turn up the radio and I wouldn't hear it. The bugger of that was the truck had no radio.

The radio answer was a good one. lol
Can you give me some info on how to replace the synchronizer?
By the way, my driver just informed me he replaced the shift boot and disconnected the air lines to do it. After putting all back together this noise showed up about an hour later. Coincidence or related?
Sorry about the splitting wording, I am a newbie and still learning.

Whats the model number on the trans?

Make sure you have 60psi from the regulator

Make sure there are no air leaks

    From the shift knob:
    Red line goes to "S"
Black line goes to "P" on the slave valve.

Have a professional chage your syncro and collar. Its not a job for a beginner. Depending how bad and how long its been grinding you may also need the high range gear in the back box.
