Hey guys. I'm looking at buying a 2000 Peterbilt 379 with 750,000 miles on it.

It has a cat 6NZ 475 upped to 550. It was inframed 63000 miles ago by Finning. Full inframe with bills totalling $18,000

    18 Speed, Super 40's.

I will be pulling Super B's 140,000 lbs with it.

There has been no other major work to it. The guy wants $35,000 firm for it.

Is the 6NZ more fuel efficient then a 2007 Cummins 550 isx?

What do you guys think, is this a big risk and overpriced?

Plenty of money IMO, but the 6NZ is a great engine IMO as well. Is the warranty transferable? Any history on the rest of the truck? If there hasn't been anything done to the trans, rears and clutch, you can figure that's all coming. What are the tires like? While I never let that be a deciding factor, it's still an expense that's looming. How are the brakes? There again, not a huge expense, but it's still money. No egr on the Cat, or any other emmisions bs. That's a big plus in my mind. If it's clean and straight and the warranty can transfer, it might be worth it assuming all the nickel and dime stuff has been covered. $35 K Canadian would be how much US? It's a used truck, there's always something...

Sounds like a fair price to me, at least what I see in my area. E model cats and 6NZ's seem to command a premium around here. I paid $41,000 for an 05 379 with an 18 speed, 550 acert, 500k miles and brand new rubber all around.

I'ld be surprised if Finning would do a FULL inframe for $18000. Pistons, liners, gaskets, bearings maybe. If they did the heads, cam/lifters and timing gears also for that that's alot cheaper than any finning inframe I've seen. If you are in no big panic, I know where there's a 05 KW W900L, C15, 18sp, 46's with full lockers with IIRC 214,000 km (135,000 mi) for about $70,000. I know it's twice the money but it's 5 years newer and still young at heart. It could be available about end of May (there abouts).

While your right that the E model have been commanding a better price latley(especially vs accert twins)IMHO 35k is a little high for a 2000--now I know with the original price and all the new work it should be worht that much--but check ebay--and I think you will find quite a few 96-01's all with rebuilds etc for much less.
    just my $.02:biggrin_25520:

I would say depending on what the rebuild including it could be worth it. Like said above what is the rest of the history like with the trans and rear ends and all of those other big things.

$35k is a little high. What are the other specs? Is it a day cab, stand up of flat top sleeper? tire size? What interior does it have and what is the rest off the truck like condition and mechanicaly? All these things come into play with price. A flat top or day cab will bring more money than a stand up at least around here.

The truck is black with lots of chrome. It has a 63" stand up Unibilt sleeper, 244 wb, 3.90 rears. The exterior and interior are in awesome shape, and the inframe was the full deal.

My main concerns are that there has been very little major work done to the truck besides the engine, I'll be pulling 140,000 lbs up the mountains.

I did an ECM check on the truck and it comes back at an AVG 4.3 mpg over the life of the truck! The company trucks which we use are all W900s pulling 140,000 lbs with drivers not concerned at all about fuel economy and average 5+mpg

The owner hauls cattle and I was expecting the ECM to come back at 5 to 5.5 mpg. I thought the 6NZ was supposed to get decent fuel econonmy

Cattle Haulers usually run them HAMMER DOWN , so likely the reason for poor fuel mileage.

1 thing to consider is the age of the truck , lot of places will not take on an 11 year old truck if you ever had tp leave your current company and hopefully you checked with them already.
