Hey all,
I'm considering becoming an OTR trucker pretty soon. What is the current job market situation regarding newbies? I would be OK with any of the large "training" companies out there in spite of the bad press they seem to get on this site. I'm a fairly patient person and hey, you got to start somewhere.![]()

you will go to orientation
you will most likely go home after that
then you will wait for a trainer
or, maybe you DO GET a trainer right away, but they do not have trucks available when you are done, so you go home.
you will be waiting more than you think for an OTR job....and forgedaboud a local job.shriner75 Thanks this. -
I think you need to do a little more homework before jumping into this one. Patience with the mega-carriers isn't going to put food on your table. You can be patient all you want sitting around a truck stop all day for weeks on end and not making any money. I think that's called "sedimentary lifestyle". How about instead you be a go getter and find a good, smaller company right off the bat where you will be treated like a human being and make some good money. They are out there but you need to put forth some effort to find them. Usually the herd just listens to the school recruiters and wind up working for the mega's for a few months, realize it sucks, make no money, quit and go home. Keep in mind the schools get paid to send you to these companies. So there you have it, still want to be a truck driver? Make sure you are absolutely certain you can handle the lifestyle before investing $6000 for school!
Funny ##### Rerun!
Rerun is a driving instructor at a school and usually knows pretty accurately what's going on with the hiring situations out there.

I liked my experience a lot. This was with swift. Trucking companies are always hiring.
Sedentary is the word you're looking for chompi.chompi Thanks this. -
The question IS ................
WHY are they always hiring !!!!!!! -
I'm alone and have no family or house to support. It's kinda like the Army, your first year is always crazy until you settle in. I can handle some weeks of in between time off. As long as there is a job and a truck at the end of the training at some reasonable point. Doing the school then never getting a job would be the bummer.

That's perfect if you don't have any family at home! I don't think you will have a problem getting a job after training. Your only problem is going to be choosing the right company. You will most likely get at least a handful of pre-hires before even finishing school. Check out this site. Just type in where you live and it will give you a list of companies hiring in your area.

your problem wont be are companies hireing, but Will they hire from WAYYY up in MA, not very many companies hire from up there, and even less hire New drivers from up there...
I know CREngland is big up there but from what I hear on here is you get 2 options once you get to Orientation, Lease a truck or go home, either way your going to be broke. So stay clear of them lol
Swift would be a better option if they hire that far north
