Good post and good use of technology. It works off Oregon Green Light not Prepass, two different systems. I have an Oregon Green Light transponder. I phoned Prepass and gave them the transponder number and got Prepass on the same transponder. I also called Olympia, WA and got Norpac on the same transponder which is good for WA, ID, AK, KY and a few other states. Prepass will not work in Norpass states or OR.

I agree with you 100%. Cabbage is no big deal to me but Donner can be very deceptive.

'Cabbage' is one of those memories of mine that was burned-in forever...

I was WB and going thru hit-and-miss clouds and came out above the clouds with a SW view of the SW Oregon landscape. Peaks and valleys pokin' out all over the place and had to be a 50 mile view. A $100 view if there ever was one...

Then cloudy all the way down. It was on the next trip up there a couple years later that the entire trip was in the sunshine. I didn't know you could see Mt. Hood, up by Portland. Indeed a surprise. Probably another $100 view. LOL :biggrin_25519: They add up, ya know.

Truck drivin' is the best at times; fresh air, and views that not many get to see. That said, it is 'fun' for about a year. Then the 'work' begins...:biggrin_25523:

My waist is now bigger and I hope I didn't waste too much bandwidth. Oh, comma all ye faithful....:biggrin_25521:

I used to run team along time ago & never used the jake then because the other guy was sleeping. So in "those" circumstances I would do the same thing. But I was also going pretty slow then, so as not to heat things up plus with super "b's" I was loaded up to 140000 lbs.

No video from me for two reasons, Unless someone is riding with me taking the vid it won't happen. Wanna volunteer? I know what I do & I don't need to prove myself to you.
Whos talking "perfection" I just explained what & how I do it. If thats perfection to you,,,thank you :biggrin_25520:

It happens, but the times that it does, I have fresh cool brakes to use.
Yup the snub method is what the other guy used on that long down grade. But because he was going TOO fast to begin with, the brakes stayed on longer & longer each time, & intervails between shorter & shorter. Hmm I wonder what was happening there? Huh

    Thats nice.:biggrin_25520:
My CDL manual is out of print now, maybe if I went to an antique book store,,, hmmm,,never mind. What can I say, most recommendations are the minimum recommendations. I think my way is a little better. If you disagree with me, thats okay, I'll be at the bottom & I'll wave at you while your sitting there cooling off, your brakes huh.

How do you know what your safe speed is?

    Oxbow Thanks this.

if you have a properly adjusted jake...you wont need to touch ur brakes...make sure you are in the right gear beforehand...we owned a w9 with a 475 cat with an 18 speed...we used to run across cabbage all the time WITH DOUBLES...never touched our brakes

I wasn't talking to YOU, trucker101 about posting a video. Ok? Calm the 'f' down.

As far as my ORIGINAL post, hells bells I guess I shouldn't have posted it in the first place! Almost like I'm getting attacked here!
I posted it for 'information quality', for anyone on this Site that needs to learn it. Now it seems to have become a defensive thing w/ several of you defending your methods of going downhill.

Hey, I too KNOW how to get down a mtn. I gear down and use jake brake. I do. And, if I DO have to brake, I WILL use the 'snub method' as described. THEN, I will gear the sob down another gear. And normally, I DON'T USE BRAKES for most of the grade, as others note too, they don't use the brakes. I suppose I should have mentioned that.

Then again, there ARE times the 'correct gear' will NOT hold you back. Or, if I am WRONG about THIS fact, I do apologize. That time on that paper load of almost 80,000, I was NOT in 1st gear, I think I was in 3rd. I slowed down, downshifted to 2nd, and it still seemed to make me think that the engine was about to blow up. Since I DID NOT have a jake brake, I just used the brakes and made it down. Sure, it smoked the brakes some. Not a lot, but I could see some smoke. Cannon Express, remember them? No? No jakes.

BUT, if you are a Newbie reading this thread, rest assured one of these days you're gonna be going 'too fast' and it might 'cause a pinch in the seat covers.

Remember the advice, brake it on down w/snub braking. IF, THO, you cannot shift very good, I DO NOT RECOMMEND shifting to lower gear. Just keep using snub braking, and pray. :biggrin_2553: lol

That example you gave, T101, the dude obviously didn't slow it down enough and get another lower gear. Too bad he didn't.

Proper gear w/jake, THAT will eliminate 95% of braking,,,usually. Hey, I gear down going downhill, sometimes. Not all of a mountain is the same grade, length of grade, so one has to adjust. Sometimes you have to go back UP part of it, and if you aren't really familiar with the grade you will have to 're-slow/gear down again'.

And 'YES',,,I do know what MY safe speed is, since it appears you are asking me a question. I hope that answers your question.

Would you like me to elaborate? I won't. :biggrin_25523:
    Have a nice day.
