Oxbow, outerspacehillbilly and otherhalftw Thank this. -
Ok I have one last question?
How on earth did we ever survive without jakes???? or newer wider interstates????
As for all your arguing about braking(or lack of)methods--here is the real question..
DID you make it down hill safely--without burning anything up and with out any excessive wear on your equipment?
If you answer YES to this question.....................
Just my $.02Giggles the Original, outerspacehillbilly and otherhalftw Thank this. -

On top of that...you merged two different posts and blamed the contents of two on me! In the future...double check the posts to make sure you are addressing the correct poster for statements made...I do all the time...just as I did here before addressing you!
One thing your example doesn't address...if the brake application is needed more than a couple times descending the grade...it should be noted that an extended application of braking should be done in order to down shift another gear to reduce the need for brake applications...thereby reducing the loss of brakes due to heating of brake drums and pads.
I know what some will say to this..."you should never attempt a downshift descending a hill"....this could be true to the novice driver, but for an experienced driver that should not be an issue!
Calm down a bit DedHedEd...nobody was or is attacking you...just getting the facts straight! Most of the threads here on TTR are designed as information to students, rookies, novice drivers and those of us with a few years and miles under our seats and belts.
Stay safe out there....and take it easy down the mountain ranges!trucker_101 and outerspacehillbilly Thank this. -
Hey there "101"....can I take exception to your signature line?
I DO DO...AND I DO TEACH ALSO!
trucker_101 Thanks this. -
Years ago, there where no jake brakes, Just engine speed and the right gear to descend these moutains, try loveland pass sometime in the winter would be even better. Gas engines, 2 sticks, single axle, 80k in a small box,, yup,, those where the days my friend.
Thats why you see pictures of all them old timers in them old trucks over the side of the mountains,,,
No Jakes, and you better be in the right gear and never never ever try to downshift.. When youve begun your descent, be in the right gear at the right time always, you go down them enough, youll remember what gear to use.,
How did I survive??? Luck and the Lord by my side.,,Last edited: Mar 7, 2011
outerspacehillbilly and otherhalftw Thank this. -
The stories from before were well founded. It was much like the old Lewiston Grade or White Bird in Idaho.
13 switchbacks all the way down. And they were true hairpin turns.
Now all that survives is the legend.
But those old passes were a trip to take a set of doubles down!outerspacehillbilly, otherhalftw and Giggles the Original Thank this. -
But a more scenic route cannot be found!
Of course Lewiston...if you plan it right...you lose your brakes and manage to make all the turns....just let er run and the Swift terminal at the bottom will catch you!Last edited: Mar 7, 2011
Oxbow and outerspacehillbilly Thank this. -
I lived in Oregon for 30 of my nearly 43 years.
Sheesh! I guess people look at years driving a truck and assume the Great Powers squeezed you onto the face of the earth only after you acquire a CDL.
Madam, there is far more to life than driving, as I am (yeahl I know...) assuming you know since you've been retired for....how long, now? -
Oxbow and otherhalftw Thank this.
