Glad you like them. You just barely got in. They require 6 months recent. -
Wabash Valley Transporation is a big ripoff when it comes to the drivers. They don't care about them one bit. One thing if you quit you will not get your pay for 2 weeks, which this is bull. My husband was suppose to had to final paycheck today(which its the normal payday).I didn't get it in the mail and I called them and they said I had to call his terminal manager since he is the one that submits all the paperwork to them. He told me that since its not a electronic check and it had to be handwritten out and mailed he wouldn't get it for another week.THIS is illegal. He said that anyone who quits they hold it an extra week.I told him last time my husband worked for them they did not do that and that his check was here on payday like it was suppose to be and he said it shouldn't. I also told him that my husband delivered their loads for them and was on time and now we want his pay. I told him I will call the Labor board on them and thats what Im doing first thing Monday morning. This is very illegal for them to hold anyone's check when they quit. I guess they have not ran into a person that will do anything.Well I'm going to because this is not right. He worked for his money and we want it not 2 weeks later. This company is mad because he quit and went somewhere else due to not making any money and no miles. What truck driver can live on $600.00 a week bring home? This is his second time with them and was giving them a second chance, but all the lies they tell and not running you will make anyone quit. Oh by the way when you quit they will not give you the long form DOT physical. They said its theirs and they don't have to give it to you.Any letters we get from WVT in the future about how much they pay and all the miles you can get I will put on the envelope return to sender and do not send anymore at this address. I think this is one of the most worst company out there to work for unless you kiss their butts and suck up to them. Only their picks gets the miles and what ever they want. My husband was never late with a load or never turned a load down and they did this to him. You get paid $.40 mile loaded and $.30 deadhead. What a rip off. They deadheaded him alot. They say they don't deadhead that much but that is another lie they tell people.

Well, I can't speak for the WVT contracts because this thread is about SCHILLI SPECIALIZED....but when I was over the road, I got .37 for ALL miles including deadhead. They don't like to deadhead you and most times don't have to, but if they do...you still get paid full mileage.
This company DOES have strange little quirks...each division works independently and differently from each other which doesn't make sense to me, but then again, I'm not the one juggling 4 or 5 divisions of drivers.
I just recently got seriously ill and had to switch to running local...I had a couple weeks of really small checks because the local driver pay gets with-held a week, so I get paid for week 1 on Friday of week 3. It's just a difference in the division and how each one pays it's drivers. I was still getting paid from loads that I'd already delivered, but it wasn't what I was expecting because I was expecting hourly pay plus the miles. I was pissed, but I've been paid what I'm owed and when it was explained to me what happened, I understood.
Trucker wife, you need to understand that EVERY trucking company has it's quirks. Pay gets messed up because they're depending on brokers and others to pay them. Schilli pays company drivers a set mileage, but it's still dependent on making sure that they get their pay. The contract that your husband signed most likely says that if he quits that they hang on to a check for an extra week to make sure that they get all the loads settled. ALL companies will do this because loads sometimes take 30-60 days to get settled. I haven't seen that with these guys because most of their freight is contracted directly with the company. Your husband should feel lucky that he's not working on percentage of loads paid like I was for 4 years. I'm STILL waiting on past load issues to be settled from a past job. I will say this, though. IF he doesn't get his last check at all, THEN you have an issue that can be taken to court...but like I say, these people can be #### slow about getting things done, but they pay what they owe.
The long-form is theirs since they pay for it. He still gets a card that says he passed his physical...and #### near every company makes you take one with their doctor anyway before you're hired.
As far as running him? Tell him to stop messing with WVT (why go back to a company you quit because of low miles?!?) if they won't run him and for him to switch to the specialized division...specialized doesn't have enough drivers for the miles they're giving. Hell, as a local driver I could run 17 hours a day if I was able and willing...and they were bummed when I had to switch. You live in Louisville? Call the Indianapolis office and ask to run on an hourly contract...they have TONS of loads going from Richmond to Evansville and that area.
I'll say this too...I'm glad they offer insurance. I spent 5 nights in the hospital and had some pretty expensive drugs and antibiotics pumped into me...as well as some emergency procedures...and all I'm liable for is the first $1000. -
Dr. Demented,
I'm sorry about posting on the wrong board about WVT. I hope you get well soon.
When he was hired back on they told him that they don't like deadheading but they do it. Like I said when he was deadheaded he dropped to $.30 a mile. Most of his back hauls was deadheading.
Yes I know every company has its quirks. I was a driver for 10 years and I have never had a company keep my check a week after I was suppose to been paid. You know they might be depending on broker loads and others to pay them but they have money in payroll to pay the drivers. Also there is nothing in the contract about holding his check a week after he quits. He was at the Shoals terminal and I called Remmington and talked to payroll and they told me I had to call his terminal manager because he is the one that sends in all the paperwork. He told me that the check is a written check, not a electronic check so it won't be send out for a week. I have Never heard of this before either with the companies I worked for. They was pissed because he left. The reason he went back to give them a second chance is that he kept getting letters from the Shoals terminal manager saying the pay was more and there are more miles now,low deadhead miles and etc. He likes flatbeds because one you can get exercise by having to untarp and tarp loads. Pulling a van you don't get that much exercise.Yes he did make a bad mistake by giving them a second chance and that is something he will have to live with. But he gave them a month to prove to him that they changed and they showed him nothing changed whatsoever. My husband has worked for percentage before and he made good money. But we moved back to Kentucky and he had to give that up. He was home every nite and home on weekends.
He's not messing with WVT, he quit and went to another company that isn't far from the house and its a small company. This was his first week there and he has not had to sit and wait for not one load. Matter of fact he had his backhaul when he left to go out and deliver his first load. I know drivers there and the only time they sat was when the computer system at the company went down and the owner paid them detention time from the start. It's 2 hours before detention time starts but since it was something that could not be helped he started it right away. About his last check I will call the labor board on this.
The long form they can have because my husband took another physical. I'm just saying is that I have never heard of a company keeping it until WVT. Alot of companies will waive a physical if you have the long form and its within 6 months of the physical. I don't know what they do with them when they keep them but they can have it.
You know its sad because you do a job and get all their loads to the customers on time or early and they don't want to pay you on time. But you know they get their pay every week so they don't care.
I can't remember what kind of insurance they had the first time he went to work for them but this time we didn't have any until October. So we had to take the cobra at the other job and its not cheap, but with my meds it will help us out. One med is over $300.00 so thank god companies do have insurance.
Hope you feel better and good luck with the company. I don't know anything about the other companies that schilli owns. I just hope they are not like the flatbed divison WVT. Also they state that you are by the house at least a couple of times during the week and home on weekends. Maybe he was by the house 1-2 times during the week and he was home on weekends. That was because he was delivering a load near the house and I told my husband you might as well come to the house instead of sleeping in the truck and you can take a shower and get up the next morning and go deliver your load because you are only maybe 20 minutes from here. Good luck

Hey Doc, Just wanted to say hello and that it was cool to see someone from my area on here. I grew up in Williamsport, and live in Lafayette now.
Any advise for where to go to get into driving in the Lafayette area? I've been on disability for a bit, but thanks to an operation, I'm back to about 85% or 90% and am looking for a good career, and I do not want to go back to 60 hrs a week management, like in my youth. (Im only 36 now, but still..lol)
I just am trying someplace to start and any help from anyone would help a lot.
Thanks,
Irish -
Trucker wife: Yeah, I'll agree with you that I've heard crazy things about WVT...and I pulled two loads out of Shoals one time and promised them I'd never do it again under any circumstances. That place is insane and it's easy to imagine screwups at every turn. I like the Specialized division out of Indianapolis because they've always done everything they told me they would do. It's cool that your husband likes flatbed...my best friend is the same way, but I always hated flatbed because every company I've ever seen wants to run you into the ground and not pay what you're worth to do it. It IS good exercise, but after you spend half the day tarping they still expect you to haul your ### to the receiver on time...and for less pay in my opinion than vans are able to make.
Irish: Hello, back! I actually moved here from Lafayette, hehehe...but I've lived just about everywhere. Apart from daycab driving for Schilli, I have a friend who raves about McLeod...they do a LOT of day-moves in Lafayette at the Tate & Lyle plant...we do a few, but mostly OTR out of there. I've been doing moves for SIA, but not in town. Schilli requires 6 months experience, and I don't know what McLeod requires...my friend doesn't have any experience, so I think McLeod might take students.
Good luck! -
My husband got a job with Schili specialized. He was supposed to go to the Crane division.. Months laster still no crane division. he is on the list...thats not our issue with them.. Our issue is the miles.. first let me explain what type of a driver my husband is. He drives hard, gives the company his all.. He is never late on a load and the majority of the time early. The first two weeks he was with them the miles were great. he was even commended by the head guy in person about his performance, etc. He asked my husband if he had any probs, hubby mentioned the miles were really dropping, bossman then turned to his DM and dispatcher and told them to get him the miles~ ya right like that would happen. for the last few weeks he has had the following miles for the week, 1600, 1200, and last week 1000 flippin miles! they would send him on runs like 24 hours to do 250 miles. or send him to pick up a load thurs night for 600 miles that he had to SIT ON ALL WEEKEND! i mean how the heck are you supposed to even pay any bills on that? We honestly liked the company for the first few weeks but then it really got bad... Recently our daughter went into labor and hubby was on a load for them that was due the next day not far from our home, so he came home for the delivery , he would still have been on time for the load delivery BUT he fell and got a concussion , i called his dispatcher and told her he was in the ER and what was going on, NOT ONCE did she ask about him, i got several vm on his phone about when he was going to get that load delivered though...again even his dm called and left a message, not asking anything about how he was doing but about that load... ok i can understand how important loads are to a company but come on my husband ended up in ICU!

If you go with schilli best of luck to you.. they promised my husband they would get him more miles after the hospital thing, what he got was 4 days to go 300 miles! no more no more -
That's pretty strange...tell him to ask for a different DM or talk to Mike D or Z directly because right now they're having trouble getting enough van drivers to carry the freight they have on order so there is no excuse for not having miles. A friend of mine did almost 4000 miles last week...and us "local" drivers are left carrying the bag working 70-80 hour weeks.

Schilli Specialized Inc. has not paid me in over a month. I quit them September 18th 2007 after 12 years. They owe me $1,367.00+ in pay. Schilli Tranportation, Schilli Distribution Services, Wabash Valley Tranportation, Wabash Valley Transportation of Texas and Schilli Leasing are other companies under the Schilli name and owned by Thomas R. Schilli and doing business from Remington, Indianapolis, South Bend and Lafayette Indiana with other offices located in other areas of the country.
Good luck when going to work with them or doing business with any of these companies.
I know everyone is going to say you probably did something, your just a job jumping truck driver and no company is going to satisfiy you. The only thing I did was not give notice. Does that mean I should not get paid for the 6 loads before I quit? It is now 9/25 and I don't expect to receive a check. Everything (and I mean everything) I have heard about over the last 12 years I now realize was true. I know everything I say is a lie and what they say is the gospel.
