I drove for 4 years '87-'90 and NEVER had an accident . So why do I need schooling if I have my CDL? They ONLY get you your CDL's and the learning comes from you trainer. If I owned trucks and someone had their CDL's, I would put them to work even if they hadn't been to school. This all makes NO sence to me at all.

if you ain't driven since 1990...?? you will need to go back to school..
the companies along with the insurance companies feel that a driver out of the seat for as little as 6 months, forgot too many things, let alone someone like you and 20-21 years away..you really forgot a lot...

Lots has changed in 20+ years....rules, regs, road conditions, laws, other drivers....a refresher course may help. I do agree with you that you learn more on the road with your trainer, not as much in school.

98% of it, I guarantee, is a requirement of the trucking company's insurance company - I'm sure there's a clause requiring "recent verifiable" time, usually within 3 years, and/or a recent school or training course.

Try looking at smaller local companies, and owner op's who have more than one truck, some may not require school. I've never been to school, and I've been driving truck for over 16 years. I know others who have never been to school either and are working truckers!

The answer to your question is because the companies that own the trucks have decided (with input from their insurance companies) that they want the people who drive their trucks to have school training.

If your goal is to get hired as a truck driver, your time would be better spent researching schools than whining about things you can't change.

If you want to lay down $100K+ to start your own trucking company, you can run it anyway you like (subject to government regulations). Until then... enjoy your time in truck driving school.

you only had 4 years driving - 20 years ago, I would have to say, you might need a good 6 mo. to a 1 year training with someone. Myself, if they asked me to go to a refresher course, Id have to say, NFW.

The schools are at least C1, Diesel driving, and Coastal, only get you to the piont of getting your cdl's and that's just about it. I know some that NEVER hooked or unhooked a dam@ trailer. Basiclly they went over the knew HOS 11/14 & 60/7, 70/8 & 32 hr restart and that is ALL. Oh and driving which either you got it or you don't. Rusty I am BUT I still got it I'm sure. I drove my brothers Pete with I think a 43 ft. flatbed through old country roads and backed some. It was like riding a bike, it all comes back except for shifting a little. I read up on the knew HOS. Put it this way their is NO school out there that WILL teach me more than I know already. I was just asking why do you have to go through school and pay all that money and they won't teach you anything knew. Yes if you've never been in a truck before school is the way to go, I never said it wasn't. My uncle had one truck when I started with him. It was just he and I for the next 8 mos. He bought a second cab-over within 8 mos. When I left after getting married and over 650,000 mi. he had 3, one conventional. We hauled hogs, milk, wood chips. Before he died in '03 he said he NEVER had anyone esle that was more didecated or drove better than me. I'm just an old country boy with a h#ll of a lot more common sence then book smarts. I feel it is 100% WRONG to make someone like me go back to school. I know they can do what they want.
