Driver is responsible to verify VIN's match paperwork, check cars are damage free. Load them so he will be able to deliver them in proper order. Load with safe distance between decks and cars. Drive them on and off, tie them down with 4 chains.... newer trucks use wheel straps.
Overall, a pretty good job once you get past the learning curve. Almost every driver I know wanted to quit in the start.... and now most wouldn't give it up for anything.
The union job was a good payer. I'm in Canada, and we are on a different pay rate than Americans. I think they made more than us?
It can be a bit hard on you after a couple of years physically, but what won't kill you these days???
The economy is the really downfall in this industry. It depends on where you are located to? Near a plant, rail head, or port?

I will never pull a dry van again. No appointment or waiting to be load/unloaded. Anyone can do a drop&hook. I like car hauling coz of the $$. I've been an o/o for a year now and I just bought a brand new stinger that am adding to my company. I never have a problem finding loads and don't haul cheap rates. The best decision I ever made was switching from dry van to car hauling. I like the physical aspects of the job coz I also work out. Just pay attention to what you are doing and no short cuts are the best ways to avoid damages.
