Truck driver killed on I-84 near Rufus, Oregon

RUFUS, Ore. (AP) - A California commercial truck driver was killed in an unusual accident early Thursday on Interstate 84 near Rufus, Ore.
Oregon State Police say 48-year-old Lino Domingo Lopez-Hernandez of Bakersfield had stopped to look for an axle and two tires that came off the truck.
As he was walking along the freeway shoulder, a pickup truck hit the axle, knocking it into him. He then went over a guardrail and fell about 200 feet down an embankment where he was found dead.
Police say the pickup driver, 51-year-old Donny D. Barton of Longview, Wash., was not injured.

I wonder if those hazard triangles were displayed on the ground. This is a bad way to go out.

If they were his tires that fell off his truck, he must have walked back quite a ways to where he got hit by his own pieces of truck. I'm thinking triangles wouldn't have been much use here.

Sad to see anyone go like that, BUT one has to wonder... The story says the axle and tires came off his truck. Was he hauling them or did the entire axle come out from under the truck. If so, one thought comes to mind. Pre-Trip Inspection! Generally an axle does not just "fall off." Something's not adding up. If the AP had a better angle on the story we'd get a better picture.

Prayers go out to his family, horrible way to go.

He most likely had a wheel bearing go out, allowing the tires and axle to come out.

    Sad.

I believe Quickway was just being sarcastic.:biggrin_25525:

It would be difficult to detect a wheel bearing failure beforehand. Touching the hubs occasionally, feeling for one that's overly heated and keeping your eyes open for grease leaking on the inside tire from a seal sometimes will give a warning that something is wrong, but that is by no means a guarantee.

True, there will always be those who blame the Trucker for everything, even the things beyond his or her control.:icon_frown:

I agree with the "generally" part BUT- going down I81 sunday night in the rain my truck suddenly got "squirrely".Thought at first maybe oil in road.Looked in drivers mirror to see my left rear drives coming off with 4-wheelers all around.Slowing down and trying to ease to the shoulder before they came completely off,but didn`t make it.axle came out in a ball of fire and smoke/steam with cars still passing me.Then the whole assembly passed me and went out of sight in front of my truck.Thought i was kissing my new radiator goodbye and scared to death my parts were gonna kill somebody as they were still passing me even after they saw the wheels and axle.Stopped on shoulder and when smoke cleared I could see wheels laying by right guardrail about 150 yds ahead.Gave thanks to God that nobody got hurt.Interesting part is I had repairs made earlier in Feb. to that axle.Had been 9,000 miles.Torque axle nut failure.Local truckshop stood behind everything and I`m only out of a days work.My point is SOMETIMES things happen no matter what was supposed to be.
