Ok here is my situation. I currently have a Class B CDL and I want to upgrade to a Class A. I have no points on my record, the only blemish is that my license was suspended briefly in March '10 for an insurance lapse. Being that I have low income right now, I have found that there are programs that would pay my the majority of my tuition to go to trucking shool. I would prefer to get a local trucking job. However, I have heard that most local companies prefer not to hire new drivers fresh out of school, and that I would have to go OTR for at least 6 months before I could possibly get a local job. I am not opposed to going OTR and I now am strongly considering joining an OTR company that would send me to school and train me. I just need to start making some decent income preferably $500 a week minimum. I have done a little research and have found that Central Refrigerated, and Swift are here in Las Vegas and are reputable. I refuse to consider C.R. England due to all of the negative things that I have read about them. So my questions are #1 is this true about local trucking companies not wanting to hire new drivers? #2 If it is true, which company should I go with? Central, Swift, or another company that I don't know about. Thanks
Help! Need some advice on what to do

Local companies may or may not hire due to the license suspension. Look at Sysco or Gordon food service in your area if you dont mind physical labor.

The suspention is not a moving violation and should be fine.I never even thought about local driving jobs..1 I hate the sheer bordom ground hog day aspect of fighting the same traffic everyday 2 I knew that a new driver had a better chance keeping a snowball cold in hell.I went otr and found the best school or mill in town and choose the best company to drive for,for a new guy of course.

Central doesn't have a Vegas terminal. West valley ut (Salt lakecity), fontana ca, conley ga (atlanta), henderson co (denver), irving tx(Ft. Worth) Though i'd go with Central over Swift, but I am somewhat prejudiced since I drive for Central.
Not going to even consider local, unless I can be assured no one will be driving my truck.. -
It can't hurt to try.
Many guys said no local company would hire a new guy but i just hit my 1 year local and sleep at home every night and lots of times i get weekends off.
So you never know!

Con-way will hire u as a new driver, even train u which i am in now
formertaxidriver Thanks this. -
As I stated elsewhere, Con Way was running ads in Houston for apprentice drivers no experience or CDL needed.
Good luck, good for ya! -
It's possible to get a local job right out of school, but extremely hard! Don't spend $6000 for school in the hopes of landing a local job as soon as you graduate. Chances are you will not. If you don't mind being gone from home, don't have a family or young ones, and want to make money then I would go for it! You could absolutely get lucky and land a local gig. Keep in mind though local trucking doesn't pay very much. At least where I'm at. $10 and hour is the norm. I think Budweiser and Coke and other companies like that pay more. Any mines or construction going on around there? You could drive heavy haul or even dump trailer. Those are usually decent local gigs. Whatever your decision be fully prepared to go over the road for a year before you commit and spend the money for school. Being home (home time) is the number one reason newbies quit right out of the gate!
Good luck to you!

At Sysco they've hired local guys out of school who make 50k there first full year. Beats going over the road getting home 3 or 4 days a month making 30k.

I got hired on with a local trucking company hauling belly dump trailers.Thank god the man who owned the place said will train in the paper. I didnt go to school to get my class a cdl i used my uncles truck. I heard where people got hired on to driving companies(local) with just their class a cdl permit after they took the computer tests. They went with another driver for a while got some behind the wheel driving experience then went to the dps with their truck and took the road and backing test for the dps to get their actual CDL license. The license suspension shouldnt really be a problem unless you got it suspened like for a DWI or similar problem. Does that make sense? Good Luck!!!
