Enjoy your retirement, you deserve it.
I thought I would miss being over the road, as the last year we have landed a dedicated deal and we don't run all over anymore. I do miss it some days, but then I think about the money I make now and how it is so much more than running all over the place, then I don't feel so bad about it.
I only drive part time now, and that is mainly because I still like to get out and be the person behind the wheel, also I don't want to forget what it is like to be the person behind the wheel, not just the person who writes the paychecks. Trucking is the only thing I know so it is hard to just quit completly.
If I did pack it in completly though, I would be so busy with other things and hobbies that I wouldn't have much time to think about it. I love trucking but it is not the only thing in my life.

I'm in the process of getting out of the biz now.
I know I'll miss it, but I see the future of how things are shaping up...what with these Mexican trucks about to roll into the heartland.
When I started driving, my goal was to get on with Consolidated or Yellow or Holland or Roadway...they were THE places to be...been in business making $$$$ for over 50 years.
Whoever thought 10 years later they'd almost all be out of business.
A Holland driver told me years ago: "don't get into this biz whatever you do."
But I loved them big trucks, I loved to drive, I loved peddling freight...but it turns out he was so right.
Well, it was a good 11 years or so and the memories and people were worth it.
But it's time to go!!!rocknroll81, Wargames, Lil'Devil and 2 others Thank this. -
i might miss trucking but not the customers part...

Congrats on the soon to be retirement and congrats to those that have retired already. I'm sure I will miss some aspects of it but there is also so much I want to do and just cant get it done while working. I have enough material for wood crafts, knife making, and lapidary to last me ten years or so just dont have enough time now to get to everything, plus fishing. Ten more years will give me 33 in the biz and hopefully that will be enough, but everyone knows how things can change with the drop of a hat so to you younger folks that think you have to be in the union to have a good retirement think again. Although that certainly helps, one of the main things is starting to save early and keep saving through the years. If you can find a company that matches a 401k then thats great. If you can find a company that has a 401k with a match AND a pension thats really great, few and far between though. But the key is saving, be it a little or alot.

Was looking to get out. Met a really good woman that made her own bath and body products. Talked her into marketing it. Got a store. Her day job stresses her out and she likes to travel. Her and I and dog going otr for quite a while. Training someone to watch the store. No more bills other than the norm for the road. I wouldn't be able to last much longer in the biz by myself, but having her with me will make all the difference. Miss it? Yeah probably a little.
Wargames Thanks this. -
