The radiator cap on my 2007 Westernstar came apart. I went to buy a new one and the Freightliner dealer did not have the exact replacement. The one that broke is either a 12 or 14 psi. The replacement cap they sold me is a 16 psi.

Will the repacement cap be fine or should I be concerned?

I think you should be fine since it will withstand a little higher psi than the original. I think it would be a problem if it was originally a 16 and you put a 14 or 12 on it.

But if the original was 12 or 14, using a 16 will be a quick way to find any weak spots in your system!

The old cap was not marked. The parts guy thought it was a 12 or 14 psi.
All he had was a 16psi.

    Thanks for the responses.

just makes your boiling point a little higher and will find weak points for leaks sooner ie rotten heater hoses ratiator hoses etc.

when I replaced my rad cap. I called the truck dealer.in my case intl, gave my vin & they looked it up. 10 lbs for my 11.1 ser 60 det. no one had a 10 lb at the local auto stores. mine is the same size as all the older years auto's. I did use a 16 lb for some time, months cause I got one with a pressure relief lever, & I like that, but went back to original replacement just cause I was not sure if the different cap would affect anything.

I found a dealer with a 13psi cap. I bought it and everything is back to normal.

    Thanks again for the input.
