Please be gentle this is my first post, sorry for my ignorance. My father has given me the responsibilty on reasearching the diffrerence between the new 2007 EPA motors. I know they have new filter and all, which have to meet EPA regulations. My question is tailored toward performance and fuel economy. My father has narrowed in down to the CAT C15 or the Cummins ISX. Does anyone have any personal experience with these motors?

    Cummins ISX 485 1850 torque/ Cat C15 1850 torque
    3:36 rear end
    18 spd

Rumors is performance and MPG are lowered!

There's not really enough info on these new motors yet to know the full effects. From what I have heard, they run hotter, and components will wear out faster because of this. The fuel economy is also said to be worse. When I was looking at new trucks last year, the dealer told me the 2007 motors would add $5000 to the cost of the truck!

I think as the year rolls on, we should hear more about these things. You might be better off buying a used truck until you know how durable the new motors are.

Landline has had a few articles. You can try a search through the archives online.

I know the old ISX (ST2, '02 EPA compliant) was awesome; in a Volvo 670, I would always get fuel mileage in the 6.6-7.3 mpg range (usually towards the upper end)

As technology becomes more advance you would assume MPG would increase along with performance. The whole reason EPA is implemented is to push the envelope. As a consumer you demand a better product. Just my 2 cents :)

Back in 2002 what was the general feeling of the public when new EPA regulations were placed? How did engine manufactures respond to this change? Did they make a better or worse product with a factors included above?

Time to check out Landline Magazine

One of the big problems with the EPA regs is that the fuel we were using up until last year wasn't up to the task. It's much easier to make an engine to be clean on 15 ppm diesel fuel than it is on 500ppm diesel fuel. However, we won't be 100% on 15 ppm diesel fuel until 2010 so engine makers have to take that into account when designing a compliant engine. Unfortunately the powers that be at the EPA weren't going to wait for the fuel to catch up.:biggrin_2552:

I'd stay away from the cats. And it pains me to say that as I love a cat but with the dual turbos(fr emisions not performance) they require dal stacks and dual cataletic converters which I believe is actually the muffler or something liek that I was hearing but it's all seems to me that it will be very expensive to maintain. Exhausts don't last long and I don't want to know how uch one of those cats cost, much less two of them.
Plus my pre emiisions cat is currently averaging UNDER 5mpg and that is only hauling about 20k pounds. Just my experience for you but I know I have been looking at buying a truck and I can tell you there is LOTS AND LOTS of cats for sale right now. Plus I know one fleet owner who has only ever run cats and he is selling of his entire fleet and getting the cummins. The fuel milage sucks and they are expensive to fix. We used to justify the repair costs with the longevity of the cats but these new ones are not lasting any longer than the others now.

I saw an ECM report from a new 2008 Kenworth T660 that was set up with a Cat C15 475 HP, 13 speed transmission. 3.36 rear ends running on LP 22.5 tires. The guy runs from the Midwest to California each week with a reefer pulling loads of 80,000 gcw of Schwan's frozen foods.
The engine's driving mpg is right at 6.24mpg and is never run faster than 70 mph. Most of the time it's 60-68 mph. He pulls the grades out west and lets that big cat purr down to 1250 rpm before downshifting and if he can, he will top the grade as low as 1100 rpm, avoiding the downshift all together if possible.
Also heard Halvor lines-Superior is very happy with their early 2007 Cat C13's and the drivers say these new motors seem more responsive than their 2005 vintage units.

I'm currently driving a 08 W9 with the ISX DOHC set at 485. 10,000 miles on the truck today.

Mileage SUCKS 4 to 5 mpg, I'm glad I don't buy the fuel. The power isn't that great compared to my former 435 hp 3406E, and the engine does run way hotter than any truck I've driven previously. All the other trucks I've driven would stay cool enough at highway speeds that the fan didn't come on..... usually any way. Mountains of course making a difference.

This truck the water heats up to 205 or 210 REAL quick/easy. Fan comes on and drops it to 190 and cuts off, few minutes later......... same thing. Oil temp runs about 230 even with just an empty trailer running around under 65 mph. That cannot be good for the oil, I would think it would cause it to break down faster.
And no the rad is not plugged with bugs.
