Hi there - I am a woman and have just finished training and am going to hop on my husbands truck as soon as the company can get us in the same city. At no time have I felt discriminated against. There was only one time that I felt 'uncomfortable'... but it was an 'unsavory' truck stop in a 'bad' part of town. My trainer was offered some DVD movies for me as I was walking towards the store/bathrooms. Needless to say he turned them down and we had a great laugh about it when he told me about it. Not sure if I should feel insulted though that I was only worth DVDs

In any case - this industry is NOT easy. I am finding that out. Driving 10 hours pulling 80K pounds in rush hour traffic and constructions zones WILL be fatiguing. Having to use T/S and rest stops from now on for my bathroom, and T/S showers... yeah, takes a bit of getting use to... but I'm lucky enough that I will be doing this WITH my husband so we don't have to have the additional worry about heading for home to see eachother... just turn in the seat
If you want to go for it - then do so... but realize the 'life style' is not the same as a 9-5 job in any way shape or form!!1nonly and bullhaulerswife Thank this. -

Well, as a retired lady driver who started when it was even more of an 'old boys' club than it is now, you don't really have to worry too much. Most of the guys out there will look out for you like their wife/sister/mother/daughter. There will be the occasional idiot, but you get that anywhere.
Contrary to the 'rumor mill' most drivers are faithful to their spouses and will treat you like just another driver. Get your hubby to sign up here so he can see how the biz really is and get some support too. We have a great support network here for the spouses/significant others of drivers, male or female!
As far as the job itself, you shouldn't have any problem with it as long as you can handle the physical aspects of it. Being a strong person, you should be able to handle things, and if some driver starts acting like an idiot, you can just give them the look that tells them they are lower than pond scum. I'm sure you know what look I am talking about!
My hubby dealt with me being on the road, and now it's my turn to deal with him being on the road. It takes time to adapt, but it can be done. At some point in the future when you get your own truck, you can always have him take some vacation time, and he can go out on the road with you to see what you deal with, and have some time together that way.

Oh, as far as the company, maybe look at some others before you decide. Swift might be a better option, and CRST doesn't have a very good reputation. I got my start with Swift, and there are several Swift lady drivers on here. Unfortunately, being a strong Woman is not quite enough to enter truck driver training. I just interviewed a woman in person last night who has been in construction 10 years & driving a dump truck for 5 before entering OTR truck driver training & she was fired after making a string of poor choices in her training carrier choices, and the way she handled inevitable "situations" . After our conversation she confessed that OTR Trucking has beat her & she only wants to go home now. She could have avoided many of her obstacles had she researched a little better.
I agree that you can make a better choice than CRST & I suggest you do.
I have written on this topic going on 3 years & while I have seen some things change, there are those who are in charge of students who continue to persist in protecting their "friends" who create problems for women entering trucking in training carriers.
Retaliation for reporting also continues to be a problem so you need to approach this as if you are a lawyer & a private investigator.
Get a good smartphone and document & email a papertrail as you embark on your student journey because if you have a problem & you encounter someone who is in a power position to eliminate you for reporting, the 1st thing they will do is take you in a room alone & try to create doubt in your mind that what you saw & what happened to you did not occur.
If you have any sort of evidence to the contrary, they will be hands off & life will become much more pleasant.
I suggest you google Harassment in Trucking & do tons of homework on this topic if you want to be successful & accident free to have a longterm career, not just 6 months in the seat , a useless CDL & a loan to repay & a high interest rateapplebrown78 and Lady K Thank this. -
Thank you for your input. Im looking for a codriver when I start, I'd prefer a woman or a gay guy...lol so what if they give me bs, I can and will handle it. And if your a pretty boy, they are just jealous...lol It worries me a bit cause im not ugly myself. Dont look anything like a trucker would look like. So I'm sure I will have**** too.
