How about effects on bearings?
I'd rather keep steady flow of oil to the bearings than interrupting it every 10 minutes (pull in, shut off, wait in line, start, pull up, shut off, fuel, start, pull up, shut off to go pee, start and leave)
And I agree with 'olhand regarding turbos. The compressor/turbine spin at staggering rpm, and they'll keep spinning due to momentum for a while after a hard pull. You sure don't want to cut oil supply until it slows down.
I may be completely wrong and wasting money on fuel, but it's OK. I can afford a few hundred bucks a year to make me feel a little more comfortable.
simple question..?

Sorry 'olhand, how's about I throw in a nickel since this is a trucking forum and we all know how anything to do with trucks takes all your money. I might as well get rid of mine while I can. lol
You are correct though, letting the engine come down to normal temp is always a good idea. But as far as the turbo goes, the reason to let the EGT's cool to acceptable levels is if you turn the engine off while EGT's are too high you can bake the bearings in the turbo. I have a programmer for my 99' dodge diesel and I set my turbo timer to 300*. This lets the truck idle until that EGT is reached before the engine will shut off even if I turn the key off and exit the vehicle.
That's my $.05.

I seldom idle more than 30 seconds or so and I just replaced a starter I installed in 2004... 7 years and thousands of starts.
UPS replaces the starters on the package cars at regular intervals to prevent breakdowns. -

Apology accepted--and even a nickle doesn't go to far today!
As for the shut off--I have an ol fashioned--dashboard timer--set for time I want--1-15 minutes--turn off key and leave--lot's of other ways also--was just stating the idle cool period as general info since no one had brought it up yet...
Hope all is well!
