My son's 3406E 600 gets 4.5 to 5... horsepower costs money and you are pulling a conestoga... you're lucky you're not getting 3 mpg.

You guys are helping, thanks. Talked with one guy and he said to drop from 65 to 62. Did that and computer for this trip is showing 5.5 act. In the process of putting a new trailer together which will have a nose cone. Flashing ECM looks to be next and checking air to air. What's everyones opinions on tires????
-
All position tires will make about 1/4 mpg difference over an open shoulder drive tire.
Keep your tire pressure to about 105...
You'll get a million different answers about which tire is best... I run 80% Michelins and retread my own casings.Every new tire I buy is Michelin but I do have a few Bridgestone and Goodyears in the mix on my trailer.
My retreads are inexpensive($120.00 to $180.00) and I have not had a failure with them in 7 years. -
What if you factor in the added maintenance costs due to all the plastic fairings. And the added shop labor time to do simple things like valve adjustments when it takes the shop an extra hour of removing enough plastic to make a playschool designer jealous, just to find the valve cover. (open the hood of a ProStar if you want to know what I'm talking about)
Look I've been down that road, had a T600 mixed in with various T800's and W900's and there was zero measurable difference. The aero mirrors sucked, the fairings cracked. And I think the T600 and now the T660 is actually one of the better aero trucks because it has an actual good solid cab and most of the engine isn't under the windshield. Even taking that into consideration not all applications would see the benefit from a sloped nose. -
Don't forget that you can get better MPG at that 70 MPG sweat spot.

thats funny right there!
gonzo01 Thanks this. -
You do realize he said he is getting about 7.5mpg with a hood right? I doubt you can say that for your truck. I went from a hood to an aerodynamic truck and I have LOST mpg. Mainly due to going from a pre-emissions motor to ACCERT junk. If you want to make stupid comments based on not having a clue what you are talking about, I'm sure the Special Olympics have a forum you can join
Jfaulk99 Thanks this. -
Ok Spunky ....

If he is cruising at 60 mph, he might as well have it turned down to 425hp.
Horsepower costs fuel. No way getting around it. -
I was a Technician for Peterbilt and Freightliner as well as a couple indie shops till 02, I think the only truck I never worked on was an Autocar. The T600 is a pain as are most of the 'droopy hoods' I'll give you that.
When it comes to maintenance they all have their problem areas, Pete, Int'l, Volvo and KW suck in regard to elec. problems which along with low power and poor fuel mileage are the primary complaints coming from O/O's
I've owned four trucks over a 22 year period a KW two Petes and an FLD and as unpopular as it may sound the most cost efficient so far has been the FLD. I do miss the look of my long and talls but I don't miss how much it cost to operate those trucks. I don't worry about what a truck looks like anymore, if I replace the truck I have now it will be like this one, a plain Jane fleet spec, lower miles and fewer worries.
I don't envy todays technician, the new trucks look like a royal pain to work on big rides included.
Trucking is a business, once I figured out class does not pay profit does I became a much happier man.
