I just bought a new Stryker 447hpc..tuned and peaked with approx 80-90 bench watts. I am considering some amplification...even though I have not even heard this radio yet. I am about 7 hours from ho me and install of my new radio...super excited:biggrin_255: But tommorrow I am looking at a professional install, and need to know should I or do I even need an amp, with this type power out the box. I am told by one friend this is plenty, for my everyday usage...the installed told me he would recommend amps of 350 or better, what size amp will affect my alternator? Also do I really need amplification? Also would a !50 watt amp be enough?

I was told that the Stryker 447 would need atleast 300 watts to not over power and distort. He said I need a 2sc-2879 model....what does those numbers represent? I have found some of this style amp online, except I do not understand what the pills are all about.

The "pills" are the transistors in the amp. If you want to run an amp get a cobra 29 or a uniden 68 or something along those lines to run with an amp. You don't need an amp with that stryker, hopefully for your sake the tech who you had tune it didn't hack it up or it will be a good paper weight.

A 50 watt amp would go POOF if you ran it with that stryker! Do yourself a favor and just run the radio by itself for now. If you want to get into amps then learn about them first.

BTW where did you buy your radio from and who "worked on it"?

Yep, hickabillies rate their junky amps by the number of "pills" in them LOL

Not sure if you are poking fun at hillbilly or if you seriously see a problem with rating an amplifier by how many "pills" it uses in the final section? But just to clear it up for people who may not be informed about transistor amplifiers, a normal class C amplifier will produce around 100 rms watts for every 2879 transistor in the final section of the amplifier at stock vehicle voltage.

This of course can vary depending on factors such as available amperage from the vehicle, properly tuned radio, antenna, coax, grounds ect. But in a perfect world you can gauge an amplifier based on 100 RMS watts per 2879.

I have hooked up my radio now and it sounds great. I do not even really need the power that is on it. I have it on low power and it sounds great. I did all my reasearch prior to buying, and I picked the best place for the job.
