Possessing a CDLA is a priviledge, not a right. Federal guidelines or not, no one is going to put you in a 80,000 pound behemoth with no experience or training. Its just common sense that training be acquired to operate a huge dangerous vehicle. Its no different than being a nurse, dr., etc. The training has to be paid for somehow.

If you really want a CDL and drive a big rig, you have to follow the procedures and pay the tuition. There are grants, loans, dislocated worker grants, or truck driving companies that will teach you and give you a job.

Obviously you learn by doing, but no one (unless its a friend or relative) is going to hand over their rig and let you practice. If you do know someone with a rig, then go get your permit and drive with them, then take the test.

By todays standards 2500-5000 bucks is a great deal for the priviledge of obtaining the Golden CDL. IMO

Just the way it is man.

Sweetie you SHOULD drive a big rig. You've driven for the army and if you enjoy it then you should. I can't give you a cdl but I can and will encourage you to follow your heart's desire.

You're a vet and your benefits should pay for you to attend school to get your cdl. I know several vets whose schooling was paid for.

    Do it.

And you probably worded it wrong to set off the right wingers, but you are correct. Truck driving schools are a scam. Thank you for saying so. Some people are confused about rights. My pursuit of happiness requires money. Money is the direct effort of work. I have the right to persue the work of my desire without extortion. So does any one else.

For such a persecuted occupational group, y'all sure breath rarified air...
