I got a passport card in case I go into Canada or Mex. My school paid for that. Not planing on going south, but north a posibility.

Not sure if Swift goes north. I think they own a Mex outfit that sends up to the border and they swap there. at lest thats what there rep told us. Talk to the Swift guys they will let you know.

    not entirely true...

at BOTH schools i have worked with, if a student comes in with a permit in hand, he/she STILL gets the CDL manual and tests from the school. that student does NOT get a discount, or go out to the yard just because he/she already has the permit. that is a disruption to the other students to put someone "in line" waiting for a truck....

this is not the way it is or should be done...your tuition PAID for the books and other training materials. the state CDL manual is given to the schools for FREE and the school GIVES THEM TO YOU FOR FREE......

any trucking company can "approve" a school for thier training, if the company pays the school a fee....then there is always an attachment to that, and the school MUST grantee X number of students to a company...we DO NOT operate like that, because once you do (as a school) you fall under the trucking company rules.....and that ain't about to happen at my place.

all trucking companies can provide posters, booklets, pamphlets, to a school, it's just a recruiting process and an "awareness" to various companies out there....however, not ALL companies supply to schools, especially the ones that simply DO NOT recruit on a daily basis...

getting a passport might come in handy, but NOT required...they (the company) just won't be able to send you.

your school "paid for that"..... actually YOU DID...out of your tuition.....

What school is this if I may ask. As for the passport question, you only need it if you plan on driving in Canada.

They have three levels of classes
20 hour - $795 Special (All sorts of people not born in the U.S were hopping on that one)
    60 hour - $1,695
    100 hour - $2,695

As of right now i'm going for the 60 hour. I've only put $300 down and will continue to pay as school goes along. As usual you can't take the final driving test until the full amount is paid.
Depending on my funds and if I feel comfortable I will pay the extra 1k and get the additional 40 hours of training for extra practice on the tougher things.

it don't matter what school this is...as I SAID, the schools i worked for DO NOT discount prices for a student that shows up with a permit in hand..they HAVE TO go through the entire course like anyone else..they DO NOT go to the yard ahead of anyone else either..

they pay the course fee's they get put into a classroom like anyone else...

if OTHER SCHOOLS DISCOUNT, hooray for them.....

Went this morning and got the combination and my CDL permit (plain piece of paper with a few signatures on it)

Even talked the lady into giving me a preference paper so I don't have to wait in the lobby next time when I take the remainder of the endorsements.

Started school and boy is it different then I was imagining.

In total I have 2.25 hours so far in the truck just going forwards, backwards, and backing into a parallel spot.

Backing up a big rig is hard as $%##. Everything is backwards to what i'm used to and i'm struggling pretty good. I'm used to looking out the back of the vehicle and backing up into spaces or navigating areas. With combo's you NEED to use the mirrors.

To the experienced drivers, how do you overcome the mental obstacle in backing up and maneuvering a big rig?

    Also,

I called in the favor to my friend about Swift and was told they don't hire this far down south. The only way I would be able to work for them is if I have a verified secure parking spot for the truck and they said goodluck with hometime.

Top choice now is Werner with CRST being a backup.

If you go to Canada you'll need a passport. AFAIK you need to have a bus to drive to get that endorsement.

You may as well get the doubles/triples and tanker while you're there, you never know what the future may hold.

I let my HazMat go after they started doing the background checks and I'd never needed it anyway...if I can make money with it I'll go back and get it but I'm not spending the money and jumping through Govt hoops for nothing.
