Grant LT I use one as a base.

I would have to say the cobra 29. Its standed true and through the test of time. It has one of the best sounds, economicle, and you can do and use it with just about anything. I think the best 29 set up would be having a old one with the newer backlit face, blueooth, and echo talkback. Run into and small amp. You would have the sound and just enough power to get out.

The old Cobra 29. Have one I bought in 1981. Made in the Philippines and you can get it to put out nearly 15 watts, match it with a Connex board and RK56 Mike and you've got what I consider the best set-up available. Problem is you can't hardly find an old Cobra 29 anymore. Some CB shops used to refurbish them and resell but haven't seen one in quite a few years. That one of mine is one tough old bird to. Thing has been in several different trucks and been mounted just about everywhere you can think to put one. Dash mounted, hung from the bracket, velcroed, etc etc and it just keeps on keepin' on.

I prefer cobra and Uniden radio's 25's,29's and 68 and 78's because they can be tuned to drive an amplifier without causing a ton of harmonics like export radio's do, and they sound great compared to exports. IE: there is no "crunch" like there is with exports even when running a quality echo board such as the LT2D which is the board used by older Connex and Galaxies and their sister brands.

Favorite CB would be the Grant XL, for simplicity & capability. For the newer CBs being produced, I grabbed a Cobra 29 LXLE and I like that a lot as well.

I like my galaxy 44. Its old but still sounds good.

I'm quite pleased with my cobra 29ltdbt and I would definitely by another.

I guess if I had to pick one, I'd say the older pre China built Cobras and Unidens. They've not only stood the test of time but also for those that didn't know, Uniden used to build Cobra's radios back in the 80's before Cobra started having Maxon build them. Uniden IMO is a very under rated brand but they're every bit as good as a Cobra if not better.
All of my radios have been either Cobras or Unidens. I did own one Ranger Superstar SS158EDX and got great reports of AM modulation...a few guys actually thought I was on a Connex. Sideband was so-so.
Tonight I was eyeballing a Galaxy 929 and have considered giving one of those a shot; I would try a 959 but everything I've gathered has said they are not very stable on side band. I've also considered finding a General Lee or maybe a Connex 3300 and giving one of those a try. -
Well, I gotta say that I like the Cobra 148 GTL. The one made in the Philippines. I used one for YEARS until I got softhearted one day and sold it to a bud of mine. Biggest mistake I ever made in getting rid of a CB. The SSB was great and well...the radio had great modulation. Great radio. But...if anyone has a 148F GTL+ that they'd want to get rid of...let me know. This is the SIX digit frequency counter, not the little 5 digit number.
