Generally they have you go to a driver waiting room at the plant. Some plants make you carry an emergency respirator with you. Generally don't have to suit up unless you are unloading.

Probably the most common chemical that you would suit up for is caustic. Lots of smaller places use it. In 3 years at SPCR I have only suited up 2 or 3 times.

Actually the worst products had drivers trained and equipped by the shipper. Matlack had a poster case in every driver's room and often had pictures of people who wore part or no protective equipment. Most of the time our guy had his stuff on and the receiver didn't and he was the one hurt.

I had a driver who's acid hose blew in a refinery in Philadelphia. The refinery mandated their man wear a full nomex suit but only an acid resistant jacket w/ helmet and face shield. The product hit him in the side of the head, blew is hard hat off. he needed skin grafts on the back of his neck where the acid ran in his collar and on his butt where it ran down the jacket and ate thru the nomex...

His lawsuit against the trucker and the shipper was for $5 million and his wife wanted $2.5 million for loss of his 'consort'...He couldn't file against his employer since he was covered by workmens comp...

Wow, are you supposed to use a full body suit when unloading such a product?

    Whats a consort?

consort happens when she gets enough Takillya in her that her clothes fall off. PPE worn varies from one plant to another, also on how likely it is that a safety man or stupidvisor will come by.

I kind of figured thats what he meant, but I wasn't sure. I don't see how it going down his back would effect that.

I don't think I would let whether or not the boss is around dictate if I wear my PPE or not. At least not when dealing with hazardous chemicals

Strong acids & caustic damages skin quickly; you have the right idea. I remember a guy who decided to sleep across the seat/box instead of following the directions to drop the tank and go to the truckstop; just to pocket the whole $15.00 layover money...the customer was filling 25 gal carboys w/ Reagent Grade Nitric Acid.

The driver woke up and decided to walk around to the back and see if they were finished. Just as he cleared the fender the receiver overfilled a carboy and his fill nozzle was designed to spray overflows away from him...

The driver's eyeglasses saved his eyesight & you could see where the acid ran down his cheeks...He ended up w/ a week layover in a burn unit and missed a few months work...not to mention the plastic surgery later...

Do any of you guys know anything about Waccamaw Trans. They are a fuel tanker outfit out of Selma, NC. I see lots of their trucks all over the place.
