Hi all. I've been otr for a short time and thinking, after chewing the fat on the radio with other drivers, about switching over to running line hauls. However, I'm kinda of cloudy on who's a reputable company and who's in the drink. If anyone has any advice or input it would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to run out of the Atlanta area and was thinking R+L, Estes, South(ern?) American... Or if there are already post on here please direct me, I can't seem to find anything on R+L.

from what I hear R+L is the bottom feeder of the LTL world.
I'll put what little I know up here in order:

    #1 UPS Highest Paying
    #2 FedEX 2nd Highest Paying
#3 Conway Freight 3rd Highest Paying

    Then You have:

    R+L
    Averett
    Estes
    Roadway
    Southeastern
    etc

I'm sure JakeBreak will be along soon and can answer all your ?'s.

You could also check out ABF they are a union co. but i would check there finances, some thing tells me that some body was making a comment about that. Another one would be Dayton Freight but don't know if Atlanta is in there service area, if they are go fore it, i know that they pay pretty good up in the Milwaukee area. American-Trucker has it right with the carriers so far, stay away from R&L as they are a bottom feeder co. and have a low pay scale

Fedex pays really good for their linehaul divison !!! Starting pay is really high for a driver and u also get delay pay . I won't put the number out there yet until I see the pay scale for ups but I know fedex is atleast in my ares paying about 3 dollars more an hour than conway who I also worked for and basically those three should be the top of the scale as the first guy posted.

Good Deal. Hey thanks everyone for posting, looks like i got some work to do with UPS and Fedex. I've heard Fedex is a stickler to get into, but once your in your golden. I think the same is true with UPS. I worked for them through out college then moved to ATL and couldn't transfer. So hopefully there's still a little pull there. Conway, ehh, aren't they load yourself and run it? I know the ATL term is a MADHOUSE in the mornings, but if the pay is worth it I'll sling some freight. BTW, RocknRoll, U were right Dayton Freight is not in ATL, But thanks for looking out ;)

IMHO--in terms of money etc--UPS(not the old overnite)will pay the best--get the best hometime--other than sleeper teams--they have very little if any laydowns--BUT--if you do not have a lot of OTR experience and an ABSOLUTELY STELLAR record--don't bother! If you have all this and they are hiring in your area--be prepared for the mother off all interview processes and a road test that is beyond anything you could ever imagine
As for the rest--in terms of the big money union carriers--also IMHO--ABF would be your best bet--they are the most solvent of the bunch--also the last one the teamsters mess with--since after they took over the old Carolina Freight Carriers--they also picked up the humongus debt owed to the unions health welfare and pensions funds(teamsters actually allowed ABF to run during the last strike!)
But after these two it is probably a toss-up--fed ex freight isn't going anywhere and doesn't pay bad--ups freight(overnite)is about the same
BUT remember running LTL line haul isn't ANYTHING like regular OTR driving it is a beast all unto itself!

You start at the bottom, and that almost always means-dock-or on call
