I am interested in the ability to use a laptop while on the road and connect to the internet. I want to connect to the internet while truck is moving not just in a WiFi hotspot. Would probably run a GPS program of some sort via laptop too if feasible. I have read the GPS sticky on the forum; thanks good info.

Any experiences and recommendations for the internet connection?

verizon or sprint aircard. Usable almost anywhere.

SO if you are stuck at a shipper for 5hrs you have something to do.

Right now the BEST card out there is the EVDO Card. It can be found at Alltel, Verizon, and I'm sure a few more. At Alltel I pay $59.95 / mo for unlimited nationwide. I love it. I get better then dialup speed easy and if near a decent size city, I can get up to 900kps connection speed. Not bad for wireless.

If you have wireless phone service with alltel, you can use (some) phones as a modem--you have to buy the $69. software and cable but the phone is the same as the wireless card. the cost for this is $10 for the second line and $25. for the data communication package.
Dont have it yet so I cant tell you how great it is---but alltel seems to have the best coverage of any of them.

I am considering a samsung pda that goes by an obscure name. Its offered by Sprint, Altell, and Verizon. Of all the carriers that offer "Unlimited" Data plans, (which if you read the contract is not Unlimited) Sprint and Verizon have the highest data per month/day. NO MORE than 5 GIGs in a month billing cycle and no more than 200 Megs in a 24 period billing cycle. Of course they reserve the right to shut you down without notice for sneezing too.:biggrin_25523:

But as I figured it, 5 gigs of data a month works out to about 160megs a day.

Now how would you gage your usage? Got to get a program that monitors your usage. I haven't found one yet.

Another issue is roaming. If you roam on to another carriers Data network you will be charged for their data at their rates which are ambiguous and probably obscene.

If they determine that you are downloading video or uploading video (MOVIES) primarily, the data will show the highend usage and you'll lose the contract.

If they determine that you are using P2P file sharing like Isohunt.com, yes, you will be terminated.

But between all the big five carriers that offer Data plans for PDA's and laptops Sprint and Verizon are the most forthcoming with their terms and offer a decent amount of surfing via your device.

I want link my device with Copilot and their GPS via bluetooth. Hoping to add a data plan via verizon with calling plan.

Anybody have any other suggestions for PDA's or laptop use with Trip Planning software?

I never worry about how much I use and I've never had any problems. I heard on another forum of one driver that did A LOT of web cam and Verizon shut him down. I'm thinking you need to use it far more than most of us do for Verizon or any of the rest to shut you off.

SUCKED! most connections were at 14.4kps to 28.8kps. Had many locations that could only connect thru QNC which is only 14.4k. Maybe in the past 2 years they have gotten better. I'll stick with my EVDO through Alltel.
