On post #12 you said "Plain and simple it's against Federal Law........ The FCC also says that no Ham radio has a channel selector. It has to show only frequencies."
I said "There is NO law or rule that says a channel selector is required for a Ham radio." I should have said: "There is NO law or rule that says a channel selector can not be used on Ham Radio equipment."
The FCC does not require what type of selector or display is used. As I stated repeaters do not have freq displays and most if not all are single freq transmitters/ receivers. Also look at most VHF UHF transceivers they all have channel selector.
I have two radios a HT-44 and a Icom FT-101E both have a external crystal control boards. In fact most radios of that era had some form of crystal control ability as well as having a VFO.
Now I have a question for you. Show us where the FCC Law or Rule can be found. Since you claim to know Reily Hollinsworth and/or Laura Smith they should have no problem giving you the regulation number.

Since when? I think you need to look at the Band plan. Yaesu FT-857D comes from the factory with 60m. Maybe you need to ask the right people the correct questions. Your info is outdated! A lot has changed since they stopped giving the Advanced test. Also I didn't know that Icom made the FT-101E. I know Yaesu did. I also included the other FT-101's. And it does not have a channel selector. Or the HT-44

A VFO is not a channel selector. A channel selector is found on CB radios not Amateur radios. Like what you find in the 23 & 40 channel CB radios. They show what channel that you are on. Not what frequency.

Channels(in my opinion) are set frequencies to certain channels. Like 27.185 is set to 19 on cb. That is federal law right?
What if I save certain freqs to my radio. They well be saved to a memory channel right? So that would make the knob to change channels a channel selector. Only difference my channels are not regulated by government, they are regulated by me.Last edited: Mar 24, 2011
Irondog Thanks this. -
Did you read my statement: "both have a external crystal control boards." I was not talking about a external VFO. I'm talking about a crystal that you could plug in.
I stand corrected on the 60M.
Yaesu was what I was thinking not Icom. I was looking at my Icom IC-T7H and for some dumb reason I wrote Icom instead of Yaesu.
I'm fully aware of 23 & 40 channel CB radios. I'm also aware of crystal control CBs of the50s and 60s. Like the Realistic TRC-11.
Did you ignore the repeater and VHF UHF units I spoke of? The all use channel selectors.
I own HT-44/SX-117 and a FT-101E as well IC-T7H so I think I know what I'm talking about.
I'll be waiting for your answer of where these regulations can be found.

You can call the FCC and ask them where to find the info. Because you're confused. You're seeing channels where there's none. I don't care what you say. I still don't see a channel selector on any radio that you named. Not speaking of memories. And have a Question for you? How is you seeing channel selectors on Ham radios helping someone find out how to become a Ham away? That was the Topic! This going on & on and not helping anyone.

HAM radio does not have Channels on 10 meters. the only CHANNELS on old FM radios were because of crystal control no radio made in the last 30 years has used crystals ...... EXCEPT some digital and MFJ 6 and 2 meter one ch ones.

To answer the question,How do i become a ham?.
First you can listen to any signal that is broadcast on the open airwaves. Now as far as your radio you want to listen to the 10 meter band on i know nothing of those radios but like has been said 29.620 is a good FM freq and most of 29.600 up is FM but below that is USB. You need to go to a CB shop and get a chart that will tell you what band and channel is what Freq. Now to get to the how do i become a Ham. My advise is find your local HAM club and see when they meet and what they offer as far as class's Ours holds Tech class's once a month and we do it on the week end and test on Sunday afternoon. Once a month we do this and have a good time with the new folks we build a 2 meter antenna and demonstrate all the questions on live equipment and it is a real good time. If you can't find a club a good book is now your talking by Gorden west its available from W5IY which is on line at WWW.W5YI.com also you can go to QRZ and take the test on line to see what you need to learn. I hope this helps you out and look forward to makeing contact once you get your General ticket. Find me on 14.302.5 any time. JAYMayhemAutoTransport Thanks this.
