DSL modem problems

    Today our DSL modem in our office started acting up. The DSL light will come on, then the internet light, and it will have a signal for about 20 or 30 seconds, then both lights go out. Internet signal then goes away for about 30-45 seconds, then comes back on, and this repeats on and on. I called our service provider's help line, the guy said to unplug the power cord for at least 25 seconds to reset it, then plug back in. It worked while I was on the phone with him, now it is doing it again, and the unplug the power cord trick isn't working. Do modems go bad? This one is only about 1 1/2 year old. Its a Siemens Gigaset SE 567.

    Yes, modems go bad..

    Mine does that once in awhile. I can just recycle the power from the back of the modem without unplugging it.

    But when I first got DSL it wasn't staying connected so they sent me a new modem under warranty..

    yes modems go bad.....we are suffering from that right now ourselves sort of.....our wifi has fried so we all have to be plugged in now

    they are able to do a factory reset if they can IP into it,,,, but chances are if you got it from a TELCO, then it could be refurbished... and yep,,, electronics will go south when you need it most.

    Modems do go bad but something may have happened to the line. Have them come out and test the phone line for noise. My modem would act like that when there was too much noise to hold a steady signal.

    Yes they can go bad. Especially from a power surge from a lightning strike. Use a surge protector if you aren't already. A reset will take care of many problems, but not all.

    agree,,,but those cheaper surge protectors,, do not run the phone line through them,, they add noise. I worked for the big TELCO and those smaller surge protectors really added garbage,,, use a UPS if you can. Must better at filtering

    I was told to judge a surge protector by their equipment warranty. I agree on the smaller ones are junk. Thanks for the UPS advice.

    Do not remember how many times we tried to latch customers modems to find they had the telephone line going through the <$5 cheap surge protectors...
