Alright I give, I have a Doug built Competition Chrome 29 RFX75, On low dead key (2 to 122 watts) At approx 25 miles I am heard loud and clear but with no meter movement..0 pounds. Now, With my new to me Sparky built Magnum S9-175 I am heard at about the same level (Judged by ear) but the recievers meter reads 5-7 pounds and a touch cleaner. I understand the S9 is putting out more watts (About 80 more) And at this level should not be detectable. What is the difference and why is there a higher reading with the Magnum?

Another question if I may? While on SSB with the Magnum I can tune in clearly the A.M. signal my fellow radio head are talking on, A.M. CH 12, Would they be able to understand me if I tryed to talk to them on SSB tuned to the A.M. frequency? I would just try it but everyone thinks I know more than I do and the words "Something is wrong with your radio would cripple me" :)

    Thanks
    Tim

Tim, not sure on your first question.

On your 2nd one, if you're on SSB, your other party also has to be on SSB to be able to understand and communicate with you.

Example, if you're on 12 LSB, then your other party also has to be on 12 LSB, then you have to tune each other in using the clarifier because at first your voices will sound either squeaky high pitched or slowed down low...until you get each other dialed in.

Now if you are on 12 LSB and the other party only has an AM only CB, they will hear you, but you will sound garbled because their radio lacks the equipment required to decypher your transmission to make it audible.

I am not sure what all the equipment you are talking about is. But the difference in the meter reading could be anything from more carrier and less Modulation to the difference in conditions at the times checked. The S meter is just a guide it is not even a real indicator of the condition of the signal. Now if you can tune your friends in when they are on AM and you are on SSB and they sound clean and normal your Filters are shot on your radio or some one has taken them out so you are effectively using double sideband on AM which is what allot of the CB Butchers do to get more wattage out of a SSB radio.
