My son tested out yesterday and one of the accounts he was offered is Harley dedicated. It sounds good to me,has anyone run on this?He could also have Office Max,Depot or just run 48 random.Any input on these accounts would be helpful. He turned down Family Dollar cause of the bad stuff talked about on here.Thanks.

I would think that the Harley gig would be team. Office MAx can be a pain depending on where it is at. Making appointment times between stops. They used to check everything in as they unloaded. Not sure it that is still the case.
-
Yeah Harley is a team account,do you know why.

Whosedog, Is radburn still standing or has it burned down again??? I was born and raised in Fair Lawn... Family moved there in 1945! Been gone for a while now but was back in 09 for a reunion at the Dutch House!!
Good luck and be safe!!! -
If they are telling you it is a team only account it probably is the west coast out of york--which requires a Friday nite early sat am load--and the truck must be in KC by early sunday-to do a truck rework adding the sportsters and v-rods--after that there is no reason to run team--but sinceUPS took over they are demanding everything can be logged legal which has beenvery difficult to be do solo since they opened KC almost 10 years ago-(but once reloaded in KC there really is no point in a team)-other than that the only TEAM runs are the motor/trans trucks Mil-york--that is a constant turn--but talking to a couple of my buddies who got totally hosed after Harley did the UPS deal--the 6-8 drivers from Harleys in house fleet that decided to stay or doing the WI-PA turns..
This used to be a great account--but in the past has really gone to HELL!!--Also I noticed you show as a new driver--is this the same for your son--if it is--IMHO do not do it--he/you have no idea what you are in for trying to get in/out of some of the dealerships--It isn't that it cannot be done--it is just very tight city LTL work that could be disasterous for a new driver--I ran Harley west coast on/off for years dating back to AMF--and through Harley dumping all their logistics on EGL--now CEVA.
the one thing I can tell you is the reason they kept(until UPS)coming back to alot of the old O/O they used(along with 2 very old family carriers in york)was if you look at their B/L you would see multiple DO NOT USE--stating all the carriers(harley used)that the dealerships would not allow back--
It is ashme what happened to this place--was--for a long time one of the most lucrative ways to get back west from the east coast--and frankly one of THE MOST fun deals I have ever done!
So anyway--not trying to discourage you/or anyone else--and although if they are asking for teams it isn't for the runs in your area--but to get an idea I would suggest you take a look at some of the dealerships in your area--to get an idea of what you have to deal with--and remember--other than very select few--about 5--they ONLY receive during business hours--so drive by NJ Harley--off 17/80 or Edison on US1 and figure out how you would get a hood and a 53--backed into THOSE parking lots--full of cars and bikes--during high traffic times--that ought to give you an idea of what is going to be expected.
just my$.02whosedog Thanks this. -
olhand, yeah my son is the driver not me,and he will be teaming on that account.I will tell him to get more info tomorrow from his driver manager, before he jumps on that account. So if it's back and forth between york and kc or any of the Harley factories it's good? but not delivering to dealerships?I told him to pass on Family Dollar, cause of the crazy parking,I'll check out a few of the dealerships tomorrow;thanks.

There's always the potential for drivers to earn more money working a dedicated account. It's a good thing for a driver to receive an offer for a dedicated account as seats are sometimes limited, especially depending on the account. While I don't have any information on Harley Davidson, I would suggest that your son work a dedicated route at least once. Hey may end up liking it.whosedog Thanks this.

Radburns still there, because one of my boys is a firefighter w/ Co 1 lol.Been to the Dutch House a few times,I think one of my wife's ancestors lived there a few centuries ago, she's a DAR member. They came over from holland to NY( New Amsterdam) back then, and established farms in Saddle River Township now called Fair Lawn.My wife's great grandpa actually farmed the area from saddle brook to where the phone co is on Fair Lawn Ave,sold it to developers I think around 1910.jlind Thanks this.

The only back and forth is between WI-PA--the big twin motors and transmissions are still manufactured in Milwaukee while frames and final assembly are in York--Until the turn over to UPS--this was handled by HD private fleet--now as I understand--it is still handled by former HD drivers--only now they work for UPS--
The KC I am referring to is a west coast relay point--west coast runs are started at WHSE in York Pa area--those trucks go on to KC(where the sportsters&V-Rods are manufactured)those trucks are unloaded and reworked in KC then continue on to Western Dealerships--this is the only other team operation I know of--and as I said it never has been a team deal--it is only time constraints that would mandate a team--on the York to PA portion--some companies always ran this as a team--but after KC--it really isn't team freight--NOW UPS is making some changes--so there may be a few others--there really isn't much plant transfer(except WI-PA)--remember--this is almost all LTL work--which for the most part is not team condusive--except to go a long distance to start--but then when making drops for 2-3days--it really is more solo work. Again as I said--they are obviously making some changes--so he does need to check.
BUT again--since the majority of this is direct store delivery--he really needs to find out--because that part of this could be VERY tough on a rookie--would be GREAT experience--IF they could stay out of trouble--but there are alot of pitfalls--and I would hate to see him get all jammed up before he starts--although handled properly I could see where this could be a very good training run--as long as the TRAINER is truly an experienced professional!whosedog Thanks this. -
Olhand, thanks for your reply,
I called my son this morning and told him to jump on the factory runs (york pa,KS)and decline HD dealership runs because as a 3 month new driver, those lots are hard to get into. This is why I love this forum,he thanked me and will be in touch w/ his DM soon. Some day when he's got a few years behind him,he will be able to get on TF and give back to newbies ,the same way he was extended a helping hand. Its confusing to know which choices to make as new drivers when entering the industry and the vets on this forum are invaluable,Thanks again!
