What is the opinion on TMC. Are they a good company to work for, have they improved from a year ago (safety ratings, driver support, etc.)? Can anyone offer first had experience on TMC? What about other flatbed companies? Who is the best?

having never worked for tmc i cant help ya any there.
there are alot of flatbed outfit that you could work for, some better than others.
if you look around a bit you'll see that I am leased to davis transport, i was a company driver there for a bit and why i like this little outfit so much, you'll prolly find out about my rants and raves about them also.but in the intrest of saving you some time ill post what i can off the top of my head.
my idea of a pro
known by name, knows about your family, intrests.... at least i am, dont know about everyone else
dispatch and FM's are easy to get along with, they wont talk down to you
they do take rookies fresh outta school and train them, rookie pay is at .30/mile after training
kenworth t800 flattops, got some standups now too
extra stop pay, layover pay, advances ( i dont reccommend)
mt and iowa offices have showers, driver lounge and luandry availble at no cost
available medical/dental plans, 401k...all that jazz
no hazmat or canada
now my idea of cons
pay is by HHG, sucky but they alow you 100 miles over
trailers are old spring ride, talk of getting new ones
you will tarp 99% of the loads
no regional, all coast to coast and everywhere in between
trucks are a tad underpowered for my taste
for o/o you prolly wont see much fieght over $2.00 a mile -
watkins shepard also has a flat bed division, and from all accounts they are a pretty decent outfit to work for, and i think thier trucks are all volvo condo's nowawdays....search for the watkins shepard thread and see for yourself

I would check out mcelroy or maverick. -
Good info., keep it coming. I live in Michigan just south of Flint, so if there is anyone on this board who is from Michigan and can offer some good advice on flatbed companies that would be great as I do have a family to think about.

Don't know if they hire up that far, but check out www.wvtonline.com

Try Falcon Transport. They just put a new shop in Michigan. They have good equipment. The flatbed division is strong.

flatbedfred
-
Try Roehl. They have flatbed and curtain side fleets and they are getting more miles than the van's are right now.
-
The Flatbedfred website is now defunct, I'm sorry to see, not sure why.
I still drive for TMC, and I couldn't ask for a better company. This company meets my needs and exceeds my expectations. I have posted several times in the "trucking company DAC reports" section of this website about my satisfaction with TMC.
The safety stats do not concern me. In six months I have only been asked to bring my paperwork in at a scale once, and that was becaue the folks at blue beacon overzealously washed the IFTA decal off the passenger side of my truck.
