I don't see a thing wrong with it. The guy was willing and able to have sex with a minor. This a child molestation case plain and simple. One more scumbag out of commission:smt070:smt068:smt067. I might have a problem if they busted the guy for trying to have consensual sex with a legal aged woman and arranged it over the net. At this point though thats NOT illegal.
Anyone who would has a problem with this OBVIOUSLY WANTS child molesters ON the street.
I agree that raising our children is OUR responsibility. However, when the parent fails in that responsibility, then it SHOULD become SOMEONES responsibility to make sure kids are safe. In this particular case a real minor was not involved. But what if one HAD been involved?
I am all for government staying out peoples lives but when people refuse to take responsibility for their own children then something needs to be done about it. Going after the child molesters is one way of doing that. They have my approval in this particular instance.

As far asI am concerned, HE made the CONSCIOUS decision to attend the fair in the attempt to molest a child. Nobody MADE him go there. Don't blame the ploice for this molesters decision to make the attempt.
No. It's the citizens who decide to molest children and the parents who decide to do nothing about it either pro actively or in their own personal lives.
YOU may be the perfect parent and law abiding citizen but Joe Schmuck and his fellow lazy Joe Schmucks are the ones who are the problem. Instead of complaining about government interference, try being proactive in your neighborhood and spreading the word. Hold THEM responsible and not the government. -
I had a 16 yo try to get me to come to her house I had spoken to her for a while she told me her cell number were her dad works/owns the biz I called him told him who I was and who I worked for he knew my boss and he took care of his little daughter really quick.
I do not want any ones daughter to be taken advantage of if I can get enough info I will call the Parents myself If not I atleast find out state and city were they are and pass the info along to the sheriffs office including screen name and any other info that may be helpful. -
WHAT DID THE COPS SAY TO THIS GUY? WAS HE CONTINUALLY ASKING TO MEET OR WAS ON THE EDGE AND THE COPS KEPT TELLING HIM TO MEET?
THIS IS Incrementalism AT ITS BEST.
BEN FRANKLIN "HE WHO GIVES UP FREEDOM FOR SECURITY DESERVES NEITHER"

I am curious to know wheather or not he knew she was 14. Further more does this individual have a past with this same type of activity. I for one as a parent not only think the individuals engaging in this sick behavior should be held accoutable, but the underage girls that are soliciting this type of behavior. Now, in this situation yes, it was a sheriff's daughter, but if he knowingly went forth with prior knowledge of her age, don't you think that makes him a wee bit guilty and slightly deranged.

You said in an earlier post that they enticed him to come. It was his intention to molest a child. He made the decision. He got busted. No matter how you want to argue it, he is off the street.
An honest person wouldn't fall into this "entrapment" in the first place.
Thats a very important distinction. He was attempting to molest a child, not go on a picnic with his family and enjoy a day at the fair.
I repeat again. He MADE the conscious decision to follow through and he is paying the price. I am glad this child molester is off the street. As far as I am concerned, there is no freedom being given up for security, except the child molesters and and he doesn't deserve any freedom and deserves Maximum Security. -
Roadhog - you go right on being a "Nosey" MOM! too bad there are not more nosey moms! I know I hated it at the time, but I look back now and boy, did I and do I have GREAT parents! I tell them this too, and someday your child will to, no doubt

I live in GA and there is a lot of coverage about a 17 y.o. boy who received 10 years in jail for consensual (oral) sex with a 15 y.o. girl. I don't know if you all have seen anything about this in the rest of the country, but none of the news reports/articles mention or show anything (that I have seen) from the parents of either child. I believe this incident occurred at a very late or an "overnight" New Year's Eve hotel party where there was alcohol and marijuana, and the kids there videotaped themselves! My "Nosey" parents didn't know everything I did, but I can assure you, my mother had (and still has!) a nose like a blood hound and would have smelled any kind of alcohol or smoke on me even if it was the next day and I had said I spent the night at a friend's house. And we knew when we were breaking the rules so we'd sneak around - no way we'd videotape !!
I don't have kids - so I am not qualified to judge or answer and that is why I am asking you parents. This is a lot of tragedy for all these families and I just can't think that this was a first-time or one-time event? I'm a baby-boomer, so I guess I am out of touch! Are things that different now? -
Look at another angle. 100 years ago age of consent was the age the parent thought their child should be married. 13, 14, 15 wasnt uncommon.
we have of course since learned that a girl is not just a baby factory and should be educated, hence the age of consent was raised to 18. some states allow a child of 16 to be married with the consent of their parents.
lets look at another fact: we are all animals and have instincts. high on our list is the instinct to procreate.
I dont need to bring up the fact that some people do not have control of their animalistic instincts and will succome to the urges no matter what the law says.
The government has discovered that more and more people are not following laws that tell us how to behave.
The point is 7 months passed before he went to grand junction. obviously their was time that he was fighting the urge that was programmed into him by nature.
I contend, and without seeing the actual conversations we will not know, the police were constantly asking him to come to colorado to meet. That is entrapment through and through. playing on his instincts that subconsciously compel him.
again, if you were told over and over that you could rob a bank and never get caught and you were in a situation where you needed money desperately you may entertain the thought. So if you tell this person ok, and they are a undercover cop are you then guilty even though you never robbed the bank??? if you said ok, got ready to go and in the last minute said no and left, are you guilty???
minority report is a perfect example of what has happened here.
What if the girl showed up, started walking to the parked truck, and he then pulled off? is he guilty then?
ANYONE THAT AGREES WITH THE ACTIONS OF THE POLICE IN THIS SITUATION OR ANY OTHER SITUATION NEEDS TO CONSIDER WHAT POWER YOU ARE ADVOCATING TO THE GOVERNMENT.
you are allowing this age of the thought police to start and the more it is hidden under the cover of a social problem it will eventually be used in other situations and america will be a police state. -
How many times has this sort of crime gone unpunished?
How many PREDATORS have continously and repetedly enticed then molested young girls/boys?
If the cops hadn't "enticed" this PREDATOR, what would have happened if he actually "hooked-up"? Would he have bought her a burger and fries? Would he have raped her?
Or would he have done something more sinister?
This is something more than "thought police". This about getting these dangerous PREDATORS off the street. The "thought" was there for this PREDATOR to even begin a conversation with a 14 year old girl. No one twisted his arm and made him "meet" her (at the Burger King....I know the area well, and stopped there many times for a quick burger).
HE CHOSE TO, and his choice is PREDATORY as well as ILLEGAL.
He will get "due process".
I hope he rooms with a 6ft 7in dude named Bubba and may his "dance card" be filled for the next 15 years. -
MichaelJ raised an intriguing question re: fantasy v. action. I personally am concerned about how willingingly Americans have conceded so many freedoms and protections in the name of "security." In this case, however, I think the charges are justified according to the laws he is charged with violating. Namely, he is not charged with fantasizing about a minor, he is charged specifically with enticement of, Internet luring, and attempted sexual assualt on a minor (under questioning he conceded he did travel to meet the girl for the express purpose of sex.) I certainly question the cost-effectiveness of a 7-month sting, and am leery of many entrapment techniques. However, to use an example of hiring a hit man, for instance, our laws have established that you can not be arrested for fantasizing about having a spouse killed (namely because authorities wouldn't know about it.) However, you can be arrested if you solicit someone to kill your partner. To say after the fact "I was only fantasizing when I advertised and brought $10,000 to the undercover cop" would undermine any attempt to arrest anyone for that crime-ever. All you would have to say is "I was only fantasizing." I believe that is the same argument used here--if the trucker only fantasized was one thing, but he moved from the mental arena and into the physical one when he began putting his thoughts in writing. As to whether written requests for sexual favors from minors should or shouldn't be illegal is up to individual beliefs. However, if current law states adults shouldn't proposition minors, then the driver is certainly guilty of breaking that law. Along the same vein, in Minneapolis we have "bait cars" used to catch auto thieves. Enticing cars are left in high crime areas and once broken into, the cars becomes disabled and police are dispatched immediatly to the scene to apprehend the thieves. It's an interesting debate: the individuals caught are indeed guilty of a crime, but if not for the bait car, would the thieves (usually kids) have gone out looking for a car to steal that night?..
