Just a had one of these given to me to tinker with. It was transmitting periodically and now wont transmit or receive. It powers up but no sound or even squelch noise and no movement of the needle. Was thinking bad finals since he ran it not knowing what the swr was but that doesn't explain the no receive all of a sudden.
    Any thoughts?
If it was just the finals I'd throw an RFX75 in it and sell it for 75 bucks or keep it around for a spare.

Dirty contacts and switches play major havoc with CBs and cause symptoms like you describe. Buy a can of contact cleaner and open up the radio. Spray a generous amount on the tuner and all pots / switches. You can buy a can of contact cleaner for about 10 bucks at Radio Shack. Absolute must to have around when working on CBs.

I buy tons of old CBs to mess with and contact cleaner takes care of the issues about 95% of the time.

    deerslayer1143 Thanks this.

Why? I'm not claiming to be some cb super tech but I'm also no stranger to reading schematics, soldering on boards, and stuff like that either.
Made a living as a computer tech for a few years and I'm capable of following detailed instructions. Working on some old CBs and trying to bring them back to life is a good place to learn and practice one's skills I would think. Not to mention I enjoy it as a new found hobby.
I'll let you know how I do. I just picked these up and really haven't had a chance to look at them.
Been busy with work and ordering my latest toy...a Cobra 29ltdWXNWBT with the RFX75, echo board, with the Turner RK56 mic modded for the 29BT. Should be here friday! Saturday at the latest!

IF all your doing is playing around have at it..... I don't trust add ons for how clean they are .....

As for a computer tech I worked for NCR in depot repair back 20 years ago ... untill they closed the St. Pete depot then it was back to 2 way radio repair .....

And I can appreciate that for sure!
    .
I've always been one of those people that learns best by hands on, making mistakes and learning from them, and not being to proud to ask for help when I'm lost.

I'm also not looking to take anything away from the "real techs" of the world that have earned their status as such!

I didn't take any classes. I wish I would have when I was younger, but...well you know how that goes. At any rate, I read everything I could get my hands on and picked up junk at yard sales and auctions...then continued on "having a good time". I bought myself an old 'scope....and various other test equipment.....and learned from "hands on". I don't claim to be a "whiz-bang" tech..but while it may have taken me longer to do than a "school trained tech", I got the job done.
I ran a successful CB shop for several years and now.......now I just do it for myself....sort of a hobby.
....by the way.... I wasn't one of "those guys" that would "clip and turn it up all the way".....I made sure it was good, clean audio.
