You are issued a callsign when you pass your first test. The first one and/or two letter prefix tells everyone what country you are from. The number tells what zone you received it in. Ohio is in zone 8. The last letters are your identifier.

IF it is not taken YES you canMayhemAutoTransport Thanks this.

The FCC computers will spit out your first callsign, but then you can apply for whatever you like that is open.
-
I have had this call for almost 40 years .....
G ( good ) C ( clean ) H ( Ham ) Yep could not done better if I tried ..... -
One reason is it's AM/FM only.

Depends on which model. The Ranger RCI 2950 and 2970 have am, fm, cw and SSB. Those two are the only radios that I would be interested in owning.
