Let's see here. There was a shortage of "Qualified" drivers in the late 70's and early 80's. There was a "driver" shortage in the 90's. There's a driver shortage in 2011. Pay has gone up. Yep if a few pennies a mile floats your boat. Me, I ain't impressed. Hell, not so many years ago they were braggin about .34 a mile; saw an ad today start at .38 a mile. Wow! .04 a mile in what, 5-6 years, Scuse me if I don't jump to take the job. Jeez, these people should do some research and see how much difference there is in 1985 and 2011. Not to brag but in 1981 I was paid 25% of Gross to the truck and that figured about .31 a mile. 30 years later and a whoppin what today, .41 a mile for an experienced driver. Let's all jump for joy.
chalupa Thanks this. -
.41 for hazmat and TWIC. or 50% of the net minus 50% fuel. Gotta luv them smoke and mirrors.
Rollover the Original Thanks this. -
.0.31 cents in 1981 = $0.75 in 2011

IMO, this is not really an accurate comparision. 25-30 years ago, I was losing 8-10 hours a week due to ineffciencies in the way loads were dispatched.
When I was empty, I had to find a payphone, call my dispatcher, and more often than not told to call back in an hour or two. Sometimes it would take an hour or so just to find a place to park the truck within walking distance of a payphone. Qualcomm and cell phones were unheard of. Technology has added 20-25% to potential earnings (this is my observation, yours may vary) over the last 30 years. -
I can't complain because I'm hourly but,,,, in 1992 my dad paid me a few bucks to sweep floors in his shop and do quick delivery runs with a pickup truck.
$10/hr with no taxes or deductions.
In today's dollars that's over $26/hr. and I'm STILL not making that.
And they wonder where the middle class went.
BTW I thought "Driver Shortage" was when you crossed the red wire with the black wire. -
I disagree with your statment. I have people calling me all day looking for trucks and they all tell me the same thing "Trucks are hard to find". One company is booking trucks 2 weeks in advance. We are increasing our rates and getting them.

there is a shortege of Qualified EXPREANCED DRIVERS.
AKA, companies treat thier Sr. drivers like crap, giving them the low miles, in hopes that they will quit, so the company can hire some one, 1 day of truck driving school, to fill thier seat.
In the last week, i know of 7 SR. drivers have left my company.
Company's would rather to pay some one cheaper, than to keep thier the SR. drivers. Something tells me, they have the idea of driver retention backwards.
Somethimg tells me, the more this happens, the more the Safety rating for these companies are going to go thru the roof. Then they will have to beg, scratch and claw those SR. drivers to come back.
So your the owner of a company, doesn't matter the size, would you rather have more expreanced drivers behind the wheel, or a someone i day out of tk driving school.
