Very nice bunch of people there.

But, I found it hard to make any decent money. I expect a MINIMUM of a grand a week to get out and run.
Spent a lot of time out for ave. $800 week at the most.

They pay on a % and the senior drivers, of coarse, get the better paying loads!
They will tell you something like .42 a mile. They don't talk about the unpaid deadhead!
Overall, I think I averaged around .29 mile 2 years ago. (I have 10 yrs exp.)
All reefer---quite a bit of drop and hook. Which is good and bad---other drivers leave broken trailers for you!
ALL east coast basically---some central US. The central is where you load/unload all day and run all night!

They are in a fairly rural area where the cost of living is not so high. I think this is part of the reason they can get by with low pay. A lot of locals think that's GOOD money and are happy to work for it.

I talked with many drivers while there that were taking home $650-$700 week after 2-3 years employed and they were happy as could be!! It was not for me.

I must repeat: THEY ARE A VERY NICE BUNCH OF PEOPLE!!!
But, careful, a few phonies at the upper level which is normal. You are treated well and with respect. And they know you on a personal level.

Van Wyke is in local in my area.

They take good care of their equipment.

They have been on electronic logs since 1/1/10.

They have terminals in KS and WV.

Seem to make better money running for those terminals. When you are in their area, they dispatch you. Sheldon is the home office. They bought these other companies out a few years back.

A LOT of money in the Van Wyke family due to a patton they have and manufacture.
The trucks are more of a hobby and maybe tax write-off????

One of the sons has taken over trucks.

All in all, it is not bad. Maybe the money is better now. The economy had just taken a nose dive when I was there.

Their senior drivers (over 10 years) are VERY HAPPY and will rave about the company.

    Good luck in your search!

Are you local to this tri-state area??? I am familiar with many of the companies around here.

    Wild Child,

Thanks for the reply. I have been with them since July of last year. You bring up some interesting points, yes you will average $800 a week and yes there are at times alot of deadhead miles, which are basically free. I run out of Virginia, which is where their other terminal is, not WV. I will agree the senior drivers do get the cake loads, and the rest of us, well. They do have nice equipment, which they take care of. Concerning the phonies at the top, I'm sure that exist, but I've only been to Sheldon a few times and I didn't detect alot of pretension. They do treat you with respect and are willing to work with you if you need time off. Overall I have no problem with them, there are a few times when I get pissed, but I'm sure that goes with the biz. This is my first truck driving gig so I can't compare to others, but I do know there are alot worse. A $1000 a week would be nice, so we'll see what happens in the future?
    Be safe.

i wont say you come off as bitter and by all means im not trying to defend them but unless you've worked for better companies please let me know.. the only thing i basically have a problem with is i wish the cruise could be set on 67... i've heard about the tax-write off before as rumor has it there manufacting shop is right behind the shop in sheldon.. the main guy can be a bit of an ### at times but it comes with the territory..

Everysince i got my percentage raise when i run out to the midwest usually to points in Minnesota, Iowa, SD, or ND i'll usually end up bring home at least 800 and sometimes over 9 if i can get a quick load to Kansas then from Kansas back to Virginia...All this while usually being back home in 5 to 6 days and majority of the time on the weekend i mean i haven't heard of many larger companies known for this.. Not only that they basically throw 150 to 200 dollars every other week just for babysitting the truck for keeping the idle and speed down...

And for the East Coast thing, unless your running sysco loads your just running 78/80 at worst into the NYC metro but majority of the loads go to either Front Royal along 81, Mechanicsville outside of Richmond, VA, Wal-Mart in Virginia and other points... if you from the midwest your not running up and down the east coast...

like i said i want trying to bash you or defend them, i was just giving it from my prospective, im sorry things aint work out the way you want it to but for right now im happy hear, i dont plan on retring here but its good for now.. there are alot of companies in virginia that don't pay ##### to run the road (harris trucking, napa transportation, crosby), by far van wyk has one of the best pay packages in virginia!!!!
they got their issues such as load planning and their far from perfect but i've worked for schneider, crosby, and milan express in my short career and can say van wyk is head and above....

again i respect your opinion just wanted to give mines
