I did flatbed, right out of school. Did 6 weeks with a trainer. Its not bad. Tarping in the extreme summer and winter is all that sucks!

I think I may end up going with swift because well werner won't higher me till June because of a speeding ticket, Schneider wants me for a tank truck position but I just don't feel that is a way I should go coming out a school not only that, I would be riding with a trainer for 2-3 weeks and I like the fact that most company's want you with a trainer for about 6 weeks.
Lets face it, coming out of school I know nothing and even with 6 weeks of training you still don't know much. So I just want to try and take it easy by the way I passed my driving test today and have tanker and haz-mat as well to add to my license. Maybe I'm being a little to careful here but I just don't want to go out there not knowing much and kill someone or even myself you know?
Gonna look over a few other company's but I think SWIFT will be it
Thanks for the advice so far

where u go depends on how hard U WANT TO WORK...AS FOR SNI they do have an idle policy that is tied into ur bonus..they are going to a different system that is SUPPOSED to have some a/c with it..we'll see when the weather heats up!
they do have a great freight base and do keep u moving, usually running ur 70 out..
u go on a "training" board for 90 days...these foilks are VERY good and patience
so that is a plus..just remember wherever u go plan on being there at least 6 mo. or a year b4 u jump again...companies don't like job hoppers GOOD LUCK AND WELCOME TO OUR WORLD -
What is the new policy? Summer time idle always was a bit higher than winter.

Thanks insani55
I plan on calling Swift Monday and going with them, I am aware that yes who ever I go with I must stay with them for at least 6 months or even try a year and was told more doors will open up. I have a friend working for swift and he likes it. I really didn't plan on going with them but now have decided it maybe better to go with them and drive there vans first for a while to get that experience and if I want to move then i can go with schneider or tmc later.
Thanks
Chris -
What's wrong with tanks? You learn tanks and then do the dry van and you're already up on a lot of guys. The more different types of trailers you drag, the more marketable you will be. And don't forget the endorsements as well, hazmat, double/triples, and tank. Of course if you go to tank first you'll have that one.
You sound a bit unsure of yourself, don't defeat yourself before you even get out of the chute. You need to make up your own mind, and don't take second best. You were offered the tank job? Do it, transitioning from tank to van should be a piece of cake.
Don't take my words as being harsh, that was not the intent.
90125-2, mgt1085 and R.Rodriguez Thank this. -
Johnday, I understand where your coming from really but to be honest now that I have completed the school I have truly learned a lot at the school but I really like the fact that I will be with a trainer for 6 weeks.
Yes it is a long time to be with someone in a dang truck but I like it that I can be with the trainer for 6 weeks rather then just two weeks with a trainer at schneider. I'd just feel a lot more comfortable going the route I'm going. I have talked to a few truck drivers who have been driving for about 25 years and after talking to them I feel this maybe the best route for me at this time.
I've called all these companys I applied for and the pay is really about the same with all of them for a student coming out of school I have found except TMC maybe a spec more.johnday Thanks this. -
Chris, you have to do what YOU feel comfortable with. I just gave you my ideas, if you don't think they would work for you, that's all fine and well, no problem.
Good luck with what ever you do.

if you pull tanks, you'll never like anything else. we get paid for everything we do with no idiot docks to bump. no offense intended*

I may be getting into tanks myself, with a petro company. I guess they are 6 axle, 13,500 trailers. They look intimidating as all get out, but what the crap, it oughta keep the 4wheelers away!
