GPS units should be used for reference only!!!!
Just like was stated above...Call the Shipper/Receiver prior to leaving....Sometimes you might get valued info like avoiding a posted street that the GPS for sure would take you....

Which GPS units have the Canadian oilfields LSD system? The comparison by dieselboss makes no mention of this feature.

The best GPS System I have found is an app for my Android called World Explorer. After calling the receiver and verifying the route with my Rand McNally Atlas I draw the route on the map...(I can choose between Bing, Google, Open Source, Satellite...others) and simply follow...no service or connection needed....The new Telenav for Sprint works great for long distance routing,,choice of 3 routes almost instantly.... Using Satellite pics before going to a shipper really can help with avoiding tight turns and where the Truck entrance is...always verify with my Atlas though....

I use a car GPS, but I always map out the route beforehand. I use the company's fuel routing, company directions to the location code, my map book, GoogleMaps on my phone (aerial view map) and I'll call the customer if theres anything that looks confusing.
Then, I write down those turn-by-turn directions in a notebook.
Then, I write those directions on the windshield in marker.
Then, I hook up the GPS.
If there is a disagreement over the route, I follow my own directions that I've checked over and ignore the GPS. It'll recalculate and figure out what I'm doing.
In my first few months of driving I've had some screwups like your son had. My advice is to use every tool and bit of information that you can when it comes to routing. Spending 20 minutes every day writing out your routes is a lot better than backing long distances or having to call police to help you out of a situation.Inland-Pilot Thanks this. -
JimBad hit the nail on the head for me too!!! Good post sir. I'll add that I will never buy a truck route "rip off the truckers" gps system. Highway robbery! The nerve of ppl charging truckers 3 times the $$$ for a gps.
JimBad Thanks this. -
Ive been using the pcmiler 730 since they came out a couple years ago. No real problems with it, never put me under a low overpass and never put me on a no truck route, I always call for directions anyways.

Thanks for any info... -
sure it might take me 200 feet from the building and I am like what is this crap?... then I drive forward a little more and boom there it is. I have logged 40k miles on mine without one false turn. I love the truck stop feature along the route. I just went from anderson sc, to springfield mo and looked up my fuel stop and here I am.
