A crane was today dangling precariously from the side of the massive Tasman Bridge in Hobart after it toppled over during maintenance work.
The crane's fully extended boom, which is hooked on to a metal cage, was completely over the edge, more than 30 metres above the water, at almost the highest level of the massive concrete structure.
The pedestrian guard rail was the only thing stopping the vehicle from plunging into the River Derwent below.
Police closed the bridge as other cranes attempted to lift the fallen crane following this morning's incident.

The Tasman bridge does have a history behind it. Sitting down in the water about 200 foot below the bridge is a ship that was hauling taconite ore pellets that rammed the bridge and caused it to break apart and a section to collapse. When the MV Lake Illawara hit, she knocked out a 420 foot section of the bridge, and a total of 12 people were killed in the incident in 1975. If you see a larger picture of it, you can see that one set of the piers are out of position, since they couldn't rebuild the replacement piers in the same spot due to the sunken ship. Several cars and pedestrians went in during the Tsman Bridge Disaster, and it is well documented with an exhibit in the basement of the Maritime Museum in Hobart.

I remember that accident. Also the Melbourne Westgate Bridge collapsed duing construction in 1970 - http://www.westgatebridge.org/index.html - two tragic accidents.

One correction though. I goofed on the depth. It's actually 115 foot deep where the Lake Illawara rests rather than 200.
