I do not have the RM, but my Garmin did that & it was software related. Am guessing a glitch at start up? It was in the first thirty days, so it got exchanged. The new one has not done it...yet.

    johnq Thanks this.

useful trouble shooting information I recieved from rand for their GPS units:

USB CONNECTIVITY ISSUE WITH RAND TND
    Try the following solution:
    1. Make sure the GPS is completely turned off.
    2. Connect your GPS to PC with the provided USB cable.
    3. Now power on your GPS.
    4. This should establish the connection between PC and the GPS in few seconds.

Following two updates are now available for rand tnd 710 and 510

    1. Dock version 2.0.6 / For all users (download without connecting TND; this is for all TND models)
    2. TND version 11.4.1945 / For 510/710 users(TND must be connected)

Note: If you are experiencing USB connectivity issue; use the following workaround:

    1. Make sure the GPS is completely turned off.
    2. Connect your GPS to PC with the provided USB cable.
    3. Now power on your GPS.
    4. This should establish the connection between PC and the GPS in few seconds.

INSTALLING UPDATES (I received this from rand support. think this will be useful for all)
    1. Before proceeding to the next steps, make sure your TND is fully charged.
2.Uninstall existing TND dock software that you may have already installed on your PC.
    3.Reboot your PC.
4.Install a fresh copy of TND dock software from the following link: http://trucking.randmcnally.com/ctonline/assets/images/tridion/SetupTNDDock_tcm18-190812.exe . This will install Dock version 2.0.6 (download and install on PC without connecting your GPS to PC)
    5.Reboot your PC.
6.Make sure the GPS is completely turned off.
    7. Connect your GPS to PC with the provided USB cable.
    8.Now power on your GPS.
9.This should establish the connection between PC and the GPS in few seconds.
    10. Once your GPS is recognized by your computer you will see the TND Dock window. If RandMcNally TND dock software does not start automatically, Run this application manually from start menu or from right side of your PC task bar by selecting McNally icon.
    11. Select "Update InteliRoute TND". This time it will check available updates for your GPS.
12.Install available TND Device update (download and install while your GPS is connected to your PC).
