:biggrin_25525:I have been doing nothing but research on trucking, more than anything in the world I want to be a OTR, I'm not married, never had kids, so it's perfect for me, couldn't care less if I'm home 5 days out of the year, been in that position in a different line of work, I'm 50 years old, 1997 been in a constuction accident, 2 back surguries, that last in 2001, can't return to the work I used to do, it was a dangerous construction job, been on disability since 1997, but will no longer listen to anyone, almost back in shape, blood pressure good, refuse to take anything narcotic prescription, pain when you have it when you don't, I know what it's like driving 14 to 16 hrs days,,,,,,,,also wear a hearing aid in my right ear, which I keep the volume on low, cause it seems that everyone is screaming all the time, lol, need one in my left ear, dont wear it cause it's too much power, right ear is great with the hearing aid, left ear is bad,,with these problems, will I pass the DOT exam, my research lead to this very informative website,,,please I do need your opinions here, the more people say I can't, THE MORE I'LL FIGHT TO ACCOMPLISH THIS EXAM,,,,,,,AAFP, American Academey of Family Physicians-----then type in DOT EXAMINATIONS,,,,SUBTITLED,,,,Practical Aspects and Regulatory Review----------I want this line of work so bad that I will do what ever it takes,,,please--feedback by all mean,,,,,,one determined guy, Jazzenut, 1 more thing my research also led me to Star truck driving school in Illinois, thats where I live,,,so far I cant find a better school unless this know 1 that is better,,paying out of my own pocket, not a problem, think it's $4,600.00,,,,,,,,also I can check everything out from my doctor to make sure that I will pass the DOT Exam, that way there will be no surprises.

Is your location actually Joliet, IL? If so, you could look into the Truck Driver course at Illinois Valley Community College over by LaSalle-Peru. It is less expensive, and by all accounts a quality program. Here is a link: http://www.ivcc.edu/truckdrivertraining.aspx?id=6316

As far as the DOT physical, you should check with your doctor to see if he is familiar with the regs and get his/her opinion on it. Another option would be to go get the actual DOT physical on your own dime, that way you know for sure I guess

I can't say for sure with hearing aids, but without them you only have to be able to pass the test in your better ear. I'm completely deaf in one ear, something a hearing aid won't help, and passed fine. I'd assume with a hearing aid it would be about the better ear too, but you know what they say about assuming and it's not the situation I have personal experience with. Reading the regs it looks the same to me though.

Here is the hearing section from the fmcsa found at http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regu...n/fmcsr/fmcsrruletext.aspx?reg=r49cfr391.41-b :

    (11) First perceives a forced whispered voice in the better ear at not less than 5 feet with or without the use of a hearing aid or, if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard (formerly ASA Standard) Z24.5'1951.

I did have a doctor try to disqualify me until I made him pull out the regulations. So you might want to bring a copy of it yourself in case you run into a situation like that.
