I very recently had a scary moment at 100kph with 60 tonnes while rounding a modest bend. The power steering failed -luckily I was in a position to safely wrestle the truck (Freightliner Argosy) to a safe stop.
The cause was the air compressor, which seized, stopping the accessory shaft by removing teeth off the drive. In turn, necessarily, the power steering pump stopped.
I am aware that the air compressor life is limited, but, my question is; is it common for an air compressor failure to take out the accessory shaft and the power steering with it?
Looking forward to replies from others with knowledge of similar experiences.
