Ronin is correct..... The three terminals had to be permitted.... by the governing entity....so everyone KNEW what was going on BEFORE the first hub was set. It's a cash grab some smart arse cop thought up to generate revenue to save his overtime. In this tight economy we could see more of this as muni's lean on the law to pump up the city's empty coffers.
Lawyer can make this go away quickly with apologies from the city. Just do it.....
Tactfully ! If you slam dunk the locals your people will be on the side of the road for everything else but the overweight...... >>>>>>>> JMO
umm.. how can they ticket us?

They avoid the bridge in RI to avoid a lawsuit from a collapse... in the meantime, it's VERY well marked.. I got a ticket there, and was on the phone joking with a buddy at 0400 when I passed that way... I went back the next week, and darn sure, there's BIG 'OL signs... duh. Anyone who gets a ticket there is an idiot, including me.
Back to your regularly scheduled topic. -
They sent us a QC message about this, with the legal route to the terminal until the frost law is lifted....

Not to steal you thread or anything, but a funny on topic story. A long time ago when I hauled water for a farmer supply company, when in the area of this one town I was supposed to reload the water at the fire-hall. But EVERY road into the Firehall was posted NO TRUCKS
I asked one of the guys there how they got the firetrucks in & out legally ? All I got was Hmmm I don't know?Last edited: Apr 2, 2011

Because that sign correctly means No Through Trucks or No Trucks Except Local Delivery. Fire and Emergency trucks are exempt everyplace.

Well, I just picked a sign at random to give a better idea of what I'm talking about. Where I was at it meant NO TRUCKS PERIOD. But I think you get the point of what I was getting at. This was over 20 years ago but I think there was also a weight restriction in place also.

Good luck at beating the frost law...Lots of roads in minnesota cant be run intill the frost is out of the ground. The other eleven month you can be on them....Just the way it is....like it or lump it

I did plenty research on that bridge. Engineers deemed it safe for truck traffic. They decided to reroute truck traffic because the age of it and make it last longer. In essense, get the most out of it at the end of it's life. RI had more than fifty years to raise funding and replace the bridge years ago. They are neglectful letting it go as far as they did. This is not some state highway, but one of the most traveled federal interstates, I-95. RI should be fined for not keeping the bridge up on a major thoroughfare.
Local drivers are well aware of the bridge and detour. The problem is innocent OTR drivers coming in and the warning signs. "All Trucks 2 Axle 18 Ton Must Detour" can be deceiving. Since 2 axle trucks can't weigh over 17,500 (17.25 ton) in RI and 18 wheelers can't weigh over 44,000 (22 ton) on a tandem set of axles which is how they are weighed.... It could easily mean they don't want 18 wheelers weighing more than 18 ton on a set of axles on their bridge. Two axle trucks can't even weigh that much. Why not just say "All Trucks Over 2 Axles Must Detour"?
Last I looked it was near 10,000 truckers have been fined and most to the tune of $2700. That's $27,000,000 pumped into the local economy. If they were really concerned, they would stop trucks before they crossed the bridge, just like LA did in Hurricane Katrina on I-10. Not sit on the other side and entrap drivers like a bunch of weasels. Since national attention last year, the number of fines decreased. My fuel desk controls our routing and I was even routed that way because they didn't know either.
Why I have interest in this? I was one of the victims in 2008. I never go that way and when I saw the signs, I questioned their true meaning because I know state truck weights. All this and dealing with heavy traffic at the same time. I was going to detour, no problem, as detours are part of our life. Then as I approached the last detour exit, I seen two 18-wheelers coming the other way. That second there made me think it was okay to cross and that they meant 18 ton on a set of axles. Errrrrrnnnttt, wrong answer as I was pulled over and escorted behind a shopping center where their little portable scale operation was set up. Since I just loaded in Boston, I was fined $5400. Little did I know the northbound detour gets right back on by the bridge. I didn't get in trouble with my company, because I was headed to Philly and called my fuel/routing manager and discussed the routing on the phone that particular trip. He told me to go that way.
So you see, I'm not one of these defiant drivers that said **** it. I'm one of the thousand other drivers that were deceived by poor signs. So do I really deserve to be taken to the cleaners? Did I cause so much damage to a bridge that was at the end of it's life anyways?
The court system is screwed up too with their monkey operation. You pay a local lawyer and the fine gets cut in half. He will not fight for you like lawyers are sworn to uphold. Pay him and he talks to his friend the judge, fine cut in half like they are giving you something and case over.
The whole deal is fabricated as a weasel money maker. I've read articles where the locals are suing for part of the money because trucks are damaging side streets and hurting businesses. The greedy people all want their part. It's like throwing a piece of meat to a bunch of savages. Watch em fight.
You won't see me in RI anytime soon. Any new driver take warning, stay away from I-95 in RI. That federally funded highway paid for with our tax money is not for us. We just pay for it so they can use it.scottied67, Strider and lilillill Thank this. -
Truth..well said.
All laws need to be kept current,altered,eliminated..from time/time.
It was once illegal to be a "witch" in Mass...if your wife was accused of being a witch the "judges" had to take into a private room for her "witch inspection"...if you protested..guess what?...they declared you also a "witch" ....Both of you were tortured..put to death.
My point?..that i hate it when cops or even judges say "just doing my job".."its the Law..just doing my job"....Well some laws are just plain stupid/wrong and need to be fought/changed.scottied67 Thanks this. -
So, CondoCruiser, did the company pick up the tab on that fine?
I'm afraid if they'd have handed me a $5400 ticket, I'd have had my fifteen minutes of fame.scottied67 Thanks this.
