The A trains I used to pull had a lock on the pup's 5th wheel. It was basically a bolt that went straight up into the 5th & locked it in the straight ahead position.

I think that if your backing a set of b-trains into a gas station to deliver then your safety dept needs a wake up call. :biggrin_2551: :yes2557:I do gas stations & bulk plants in Alberta & B.C. Hauling Esso,Shell,UFA,7-11's et al. And there is not one place that we would back into for safety reasons.:biggrin_25512: At Shell Stations you can't even backup a few feet to set up UNLESS you have cones & barricades & a spotter and thats for as little as two feet. Don't take me wrong here, I'm not picking on you or saying that "YOU" are doing anything wrong, because I know it's how your company has it setup & thats what I think is wrong & unsafe.

Shoot I couldnt back up a car dolly the other night with a car on it. There is no way I could do it. LOL

I went one way the dolly went another way and the stupid car went straight. I had to get out take the car off and then back it up. But it was sleeting so it didnt take to long to do. LOl

I hardly ever spot the dolly in front of the back pup anymore. It save a lot of time and dolly handling to get the lead, put the dolly on, then go grab the back trailer. Never did this way until my company started buying used Penske trucks without pintle hooks. You learn to do it fast then. I can back doubles but only if no one is standing around watching or waiting on me to get out of their way. It seems like loaded back easier than empty and level hard surfaces back better than muddy or wet surfaces. Also when making pull ups to straighten out I try to not pull up as far each time as the last pull up. If I keep going back to the start point on pull ups then that's a sign that this is not the day to back doubles

I have had limited sucess backing doubles. Backed out of a offset problem in 91 at the truck roadeo and got through the gates ok on the second try. Used to be alone at a terminal so I could practice putting them in the dock. I though the best way to describe the process was to think double backwards. Just be sure to know where the converter dolly is so it doesn't get jacknifed too far. Quit pulling doubles in 02.
