Hello everyone, I am researching a couple different schools in my area (Wisconsin). DDS out of Sun Prairie is, from what I have read here, a CDL mill. They charge about $4,500. They start classes every three weeks and classes run 4 weeks. Fox Valley Tech costs half the price but is a ten week course and from what I have read on the threads is a very good school and comes highly recommended. The problem is that I can't get in at FVT until summer at the earliest. I am currently unemployed. Is it worth it for me to wait for FVT to get the better/cheaper education or is going through DDS going to put me in the same position after graduation but for twice the cost? Any one have any input on these two schools that might help me make a decision? Thanks.

WTT, IF I were to do it again I'd go with a school that was approved by a potential employer.

In this example, Crete uses these schools. Fox is the only one in WI. it appears. http://www.cretecarrierjobs.com/driving-schools

I'm not saying Crete would have to be your Employer,,,etc, blah, blah, blah. I'd look at other companies too and check to see which schools they approve of. I've seen way, way too many horror stories about these CDL mills.

You are NOT 'locked in' to ONLY going to a school in your state; look at other states schools. For example, I went to Central Tech in Oklahoma and they had 6 folks out of 19 in the class, from out of state. I see their price is $4500 out of state/yikes, tho it is 1 month only. Great school, too. I'd do that, and pay maybe $1,000 livin'g exp. before I'd do a 'cdl mill'.

    Hope this helps. I think I paid $1,500, in-state THEN, tho it is $2,500 in-state now. Hey,,,I'm old...:biggrin_2559:

Hey, as i read more and more threads here, which btw I am SO glad I found this site, I am getting great information that is helping me make my decision. Having said that, here is another wrench in the process. I just got a call from CRST, I filled out some sort of application on a website and have been getting calls and e-mails from numerous companies now. CRST is offering to bring me to Iowa, put me up in their brand new dormitory for a three week training course and pay for my schooling in exchange for a 8 month contract after graduation. Any thoughts on this type of education/servitude?

Is the CRST dormitory in Cedar Rapids, IA?
Just wondering, as Kirkwood Community College is the only driving school I know of in Cedar Rapids.

I am actually headed to Wisconsin next Saturday to start school at RDTC. Don't know if you looked into them, the cost is 2800, a lot cheaper than the schools here in NY

Back when I went to school, I did Stevens Transport in Dallas. I didn't want to work for them so after I got the cdl I decided to go elsewhere. Since they didn't give me my final exam I didn't have to pay the full tution only $600. Wound up graduating from Schneider in Green Bay. Great training, fun on the skid pad (In a cabin over at that!) only thing trucks slow, pay average. Out of state might be the way to go unless you go to the unemployment office and ask about Workforce Investment Act funds to be trained at college and wind up not having to pay a dime. Good luck going forward!
