Nothing sadder than seeing someone searching for their beloved FLUFFY or ROVER at a truckstop after it decided to wander off.

Sound of the TURBO is very hard on either animal , that constant WHINE , ( THEY hear it more than we do ) has to be hard on them.

Wait and get your training down and some experience under your belt. There's nothing wrong with a pet on the road at a pet friendly company. The road can get lonely at times and it's good to have a buddy with you. A pet can be very rewarding at times. I can't count the times I been mad and my dog pulled me out of it. They can sense them things. I would go with a small female dog and have her spayed. The hair thing, it's either extra cleaning or haircuts. I keep a full size vacuum under my bunk and cleaning is a breeze. I also keep a dog bed on the floor and a towel on the passenger seat as that's their two favorite places.
There's added responsibility as you have to make extra stops so they can go to the bathroom at times. For the most part, mine go when I go. We each get our own tree, lol. jk

I'm also starting out and had the same question, and agrree with condocruise id get use to driving and how the company operates. thats my plan anyway. My other bit of advice is get the dog/ cat when you have some home time, or a vacation that way you both can get use to echother before you have to head out on the road.

I talked to the monkey man last night & he said he is not interested in going back on the road.

I'm at a loss of words........ Just make sure it isn't a snapping turtle.

That might work Skiffde. As for the OP, I'd suggest a dog over a cat any day but it all depends on what you want. From my experience having both growing up is that my dog always has had my back when I was down. Cats just do their own thing. And might be the other way around for people but dogs just seem to be there more in my opinion.

No offense to you cat people! lol

You don't even have your CDL but want to get a pet? What about your time off? Where are you and your pet going to spend your time? No house so you will need to rent a motel or stay with friends and/or family. You may want to check with them first.

Some people got pets to keep in their trucks when states such as California prohibited trucks from idling. There was an exemption if you had a pet in the truck. The driver can go ??#?#E? Not long ago I read an article where they plan on changing the legislation where it won't make any difference whether you have a pet in the truck or not. California actually has their own "CARB" police to go around and write tickets to those who are idling their trucks. You won't be allowed to take your pet into the truck stop so you will need to leave it in the truck. In summer temperatures can be very hot. Winter can be very cold. So, do you think it will be fair to the pet?

Most carriers do not allow pets in their trucks. You certainly don't want to get one before getting your own truck. Put a pet in a company truck without permission and you and fluffy could find yourselves walking home, literally. You will also likely have a black mark on your DAC for violating company policy. If you want a pet, then find another profession or get a local job where you can leave it at home. The road is no place for pets, at least in a truck. Pets will be cooped up for hours and can be a distraction. There are a number of reasons why pets should not be in a truck.

If I were you I would not worry about having a pet at this point. You should concentrate on getting your CDL, if you don't yet have it, and learning to drive. Forget about having a pet at least until you get settled in your new career. You could lose a very good opportunity by having a pet in the truck. As I stated, most carriers don't allow them. If you want someone to talk to then get a CB. There are still a few drivers who know how to use them.
