About to head out for my 3rd month, last month was good until i got to Reno on a high paying military load, then did a load from Reno to Vegas, took a few days to get a load out of Vegas, even then it only paid $1.11 to the truck, my company does not offer me much more than i can find myself on the boards, i often find better loads as i can spend more time looking when im empty, had a level 1 inspection as i came back to Florida, passed without any issues, time to head out of Florida again, i like my job, however with fuel prices and all the cheap freight around, im scraping by, someone told me he is getting .42 cents a mile starting pay at his company driver job, right now thats looking good to me.........................Rich

u might want to call mercer-trans, or ck their web site,u can choose loads, and they seem to pay well, and pay a premium for east coast(still a bad run,but at least u make money, and they get u out of there! i also avoid the 95 north of richmond va,often faster using the 81,then cut over as needed.

back home again, scored a great load this time out, Detroit MI to Laredo TX 1640 miles, paid $5000, less 20% to company and fuel paid $2800 after all expenses, truck still producing black smoke when accelerating and slight misfire 12-14k rpm's, average mpg for 2 weeks 5.75 mpg, average price of fuel $4 a gallon, prepass transponder arriving monday, spent $420 having a/c fixed, getting van vented, actually some decent paying loads out of Florida right now, overall liking my job, making money, own authority in the works................looking to buy a 53ft dry van, non trans roof, air slide tandems, vented, will also get a flatbed trailer soon........

Glad to see things have turned around since your trip to Vegas. When you get your authority, you're going to scratch your head and wonder why you didn't do that in the first place.

im sure your right, however i think this was a good way to get my feet wet, so to speak, also i did not have to fork out so much upfront cash, now i can use money that i have earned to get my authority, and i now have a better understanding of the business.....

Don't get me wrong, you'll experience some challenges getting started as a "new carrier" even though you personally are not brand new to the industry. It's a hustle but you'll get through it just like you have with your current arrangement.

Try cleaning your battery connections.Or it could be waste gate on turbo dumping pressure early making it cough and sound like a miss.

Had the same problem with my 05 Freightliner Century with 12.7 Detroit. A great mechanic finally told me the problem. Around 1250 rpm the ecm changes the timing on the injectors. (advance kicks in) this results in a momentary stumble a puff of black smoke then all is well. Its not a big problem and there isnt any reason to start throwing parts at it. All detroits built in that era do it just to varying degrees...
