The good thing about a uniform required by a company over wearing your own clothes.....Tax deductable!
That is the only way you can claim your clothes on your taxes is if the company requires you to wear them and you have to pay for them and yes some companies require it. As to the "legal" thing. If you sign the contract you buy the uniform just like a L/P.
Except for your footwear.
OSHA requires that a truck driver wear safety type shoes.
REASON:
Trucks fall under the heavy equipment section of the rules.
Point: If you are doing a PTI in flip flops, tennis shoes or anything not considered by OSHA as safety type shoes and you cut your foot twist or break your ankle or some kind of injury below the ankle, Workers Comp can refuse and in most cases DO refuse to pay for the medical, so buy those safety shoes and deduct them every year. I laugh every time a see Billy Big Rigger hop out of a truck in sandals or flip flops!
Another point is OSHA requires us to wear oil resistant soles. I have yet to see a flip flop, sandal, or tennie bopper tennis shoe come in those oil resistant soles!
In fact my wife had bought me a pair of those funny named high topped boots and I wore them in to a safety meeting the next day and the safety guy stopped next to my chair and asked me what the name of my boots were. We looked and then at the bottom and there was no "oil resistant" patch on the bottom. He told me he had just gotten a safety notice from Kelly and Assn about that and how drivers were getting kicked off some docks and writeups from DOT. The wife took them back and I went to Monett and got a nice pair of Justins!
Yet OSHA approved and tax deductible!
But for uniforms, the best way is when the company pays for them and even pays to clean them!
That also can keep the wife happy as all the dirt and grease is going into someone elses washing machine and she's not folding or hanging them! Gotta keep momma happy!

In california, if an employer requires you wear a uniform, they must 1st-provide the uniform..2nd-they must provide ALL the care and maintenance of said uniform.. they do things a bit different out west....Oh and we think all our laws supersede all others..

Hello my fellow truckers. I have been reading all the comments. Thank you Rollover for pointing out the tax benefits of uniforms. I forgot about mentioning that! Rush also has changed the deductions. We pay $5 for 26 weeks and then it goes down to $1 per week. We still do the laundry but at least I do not have to ruin my own clothes and I can get them replaced whenever I need to.
We all have horror stories from places we have worked at. This is of course my opinion and I can certainly see from some responses, that it is not shared
I guess if I got terminated for tearing up equipment, I would be upset too. Kudos to all you other truckers who are out there every day keeping the roads safe!!!
In response to the minimum wage posting, I have figured out my hourly rate MANY times. I average between $12-14 per hour working at the percentage rate. That includes ALL the time I spend waiting for the next load.Rollover the Original Thanks this.
