Hello, I'm thinking of joining in the career of truck driving. I'm single and have always been amazed by large trucks. I'm at a perfect spot in my life to hit the road. I'm single, between jobs and almost broke.... lol Couple of questions....

    1) How is it going with TMC. I know that there is not a perfect place to work, but if you can follow rules and take the ups and downs of slow times and trying loads and dispatching, overall how is it? My family roots are in Iowa, yes I just admitted that. I also love that they are privately owned and spend so much time on tarping and other aspects of training. Some carriers only have you in orientation for 3 days and then your training.

    2) What is the hardest part about being over the road and how do you overcome those obsticles?

Thank you in advance for your guidance and help in this matter. Please feel free to email with anything that you may not want to post.

Yep, I'm thinking to go TMC as well, today I spoke with a TMC driver (one month in the company), and he said that they don't push him to run illegally (fake the logs), and everything is as the recruiter said. Good luck, I may see you at Columbia, SC.

TMC's rep is not what it used to be. If I was looking to start flatbedding I would look at mcelroy or maverick.

I am glad that I chose TMC to work for. TMC treats me well. I have had a couple of rough weeks lately but it isn't like the company is out to get me. I had one consignee close three hours early for fathers day weekend so I was stuck on that load for the weekend, and I had the marker lights fail on my trailer and sat for 18 hours at the TA in new haven CT getting them fixed. I can't really blame the company for that. AND after sitting that 18 hours I got dispatched on a different load than originally planned that set me right up for going home.

I even had to take some time off to help out my family and got to come back without any problems, and even got to maintain my benefits for the three weeks I was away.

The hardest part for me is leaving home each time. It seems to get harder and harder each time, but that is just me. Of course this week will be good since my Wife is going to be riding with me, so I dont' have to say goodbye.

If you have any other questions just ask. I don't get on here much so you may have to be patient.

    Rawlco,

Are you doing the cpm or % plan? Do you find that the % is better like they say?

I'm prehired and will go to Iowa once I get my CDL in a few weeks. I chose TMC because I've heard several times that if you are willing to run hard, you have an opportunity to earn between $55-$60 first year.

    Any truth to this?

I am on the percentage pay plan

I think that you can make money either way, but I feel more adequately compensated for some loads on the percent plan. My best load to date was all of 50 loaded miles and paid me $140 for that half a days work. On the mileage pay plan I would have gotten $15 for that same half a days work.

Of course I doubt they would have put a mileage guy on that short a run, they try to look for loads with miles to them for them. I believe that you could make a decent paycheck in the longhaul division with some of these cross country trips being paid mileage, but the short runs are where the percentage pay shines.

You are free to make up your own mind after your training period is over. You will see what the loads pay that you haul with your trainer and how much you would make on either plan.

As they say location is everything. I live in Maine and the freight in and out of this state is cheap, and trying to get home here to a corner of the country has limited options so I end up taking several cheaper loads to line me up to get home. This has me on track to make $40,000 to $45,000 in my first year in my own truck. I also take a lot of time off, being home here late Thursday night for the weekend already. If you live in a good freight lane and don't want to spend a lot of time at home you can make that $50,000 number easily I believe.

Keep in mind two things. first: That is $50,000 in your first year IN YOUR OWN TRUCK. You will have 8 weeks of orientation/training at a lower pay rate. Second: that is before taxes, be sure to plan on how much uncle sam will take before you spend that $50,000. Good luck.

A Maverick driver told me he's likes the company; except, all the trucks are auto. Don't know if that's true or if it matters.
