A long time problem is finally being recognized. There have been like 5 incidences lately. Just because they are being watched closely.
They are remedying the situation by putting another $160,000/yr controller on duty. Our tax dollars well spent at some of these airports where maybe 1 airplane might come in.
They suffer they same problem as the trucking industry. The human body wasn't meant to work 1st shift one day and 3rd shift the next. The problem is not so much the sleepy controller as it is the poor work schedules.
Controllers have been scared to stand up for their rights ever since Reagan fired them all in 1981. Ironic the first caught incident was at Reagan National.
Some small airports, a plane can remotely turn on the runway lights by dialing in a certain frequency and keying the mike. They ought to put a similar alarm clock in the towers. Dial in the frequency and wake him up, lol.
