Will this count as experience?

    So, heres the deal... once I turn 19 I plan on going for my class 1. I haven't figured out all the details, but there is one thing that makes me curious.

    See, my uncle owns a Towing/Wrecking company, along with a few other small ventures, which includes a 1990 something International COE. He currently has a Tanker for it, to haul water during fire season, as well as the mobile home(trailer) towing equipment, and he is planning on getting a flatbed to haul lumber/scrap metal/etc..

    My question is... if I worked for him for a year or two, would that be decent experience that a larger company takes into consideration, or would they take it as less that it is, because it's not with a "trucking" company?

    It probably seems like a silly question, but I don't want to be 3 or 4 years down the road and find out it was pointless.

    Hi Willies! Welcome to the forum.

    That would just count as experience to another local company. For OTR, they look at your experience with other OTR or regional companies and it has to be within the last 3 years. To be a qualifying company, most say you must travel five states.
    So if you go OTR, never take more than a 3 year break if you plan on going back out.
    If you have experience and take more than 3 year break, you are still hireable, but they will send you back out with a trainer for refresher training.

    You can get your CDL through your Uncle and save some money. But you will still have to go out with a trainer for 6-8 weeks before they give you your own truck.

    Welcome, sounds like you could learn alot from him. I would not worry too much about experience as most of the company's at least around here are taking students fresh out of class for their OTR operations.

    What.?Really? I have never heard of that before;not that they wouldn't do it,but the insurance companies,would they not frown on that?:biggrin_2556: They don't have to go out with a trainer or anything?

    Theres very few companys that train newbies up here. Id say they would take it as some experience but there mostly looking for mountain experience in those 2 years of experience that they want.

    Your correct sir! They will still have to go with a trainer, but they would hire them non the less.
