I have had mine since November, it's not had any problems, (knock on wood)
I to like that you can change the color of the display, its dimming abilities is nice too, Also has a scan feature which will scan all 40 channels, as well as scanning the weather channels...
All and all I like it...golightly Thanks this. -
How well does the scan on them work? Does the radio have to be receiving a certain S unit for it to stop? Or can it distinguish the difference between voices and high levels of static/white noise?
-
I have two, and no problems...The one hitting the shops now tho are NOT the 50th Anniversary Editions either...They are called "Cobra 29 LX LCD", which are basically the same radio as the LX LE's but without the 50th Annv. logo...Plus they have a alarm clock on them now...
As for the "Scan", it works fairly well...For the radio to scan, you have o have the squelch up to where you don't hear any static, and then when scanning voices will need to hit a certain S-unit before it will stop...So it depends on where you have your squelch set, as to how loud a signal needs to be before the scan will stop on a channel.
Weather Bands are nice, but if your in a area where there may be some Alerts...Be sure to have the "Alert" turned off on our radio! Thing will scare the hell out of you when it go's off!

Hmmm how loud is the WX alarm? I had one on my PC68LTW and it wasn't that loud.
-
its pretty loud, you will definitely hear it, it's more of an odd high pitch sound that will get your attention...
-
Specially if your driving at night, and it's all nice and quite outside...nothing on the radio....you can even have the radio turned off...then....
ERRRRRRRRRRRRR....

EERRR? LOL that's what the tires on my turbo Buick say when they're unmercifully being punished by all that torque.
IIRC my PC68LTW did have an "off" on the WX knob. Pretty sure that killed it getting weather reports.
The few times mine did go off, it made more of a "EEEEEEEE" sound. Think of Bill McKinleys character on Deliverance. -
The main board in the two LX versions is essentially the same as the previous 29s. The only significant change is predictable: the fancy display board, and the scan on the newest one. Once the hood is raised on the new ones, and ignoring the front panel, it all looks like the same ones we've been playing with for awhile now, including adjustment locations and such.
No real problems to report here, aside from the front panel not being as intuitive as the simpler versions.

I had one and hated it. The chanel scan is slow, the display cant be seen too well in the daytime and bright sun, I think they went back wards with the new knobs mine was the all stuck together on the double knobs. I had one for 2 days and sold it.
golightly Thanks this.
